When Denny Laine quit as vocalist for the Moody Blues having sang on their hit "Go Now" he was replaced by Justin Hayward who was the vocalist on their mega hit "Nights in White Satin".

When Steve Marriott quit the Small Faces they dropped the "Small" from their name and recruited a Mr Stewart who took over vocal duties.

Both very fine vocalists, but very, very different. Apart from having some of the same personnel, the two bands were very different too, making comparisons even more difficult.

They allegedly dropped the "Small" from their name because unlike Marriott, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, who both joined from the Jeff Beck Group, weren't that small.

True, but the changes went far deeper than the change of name.

And probably all the Genesis fans who only liked them with Gabriel as frontman.

Anyone willing to discount Floyd post Barrett is a damned fool. Both examples and the commercial success they went on to achieve prove Tom spectacularly wrong.

Genesis, never my cup of tea in any incarnation but were clearly more successful without Gabriel.
