[Misc] Decking? What is the ******* point of it?

I don't understand the point of putting decking in a garden.

Am I missing something? All people are doing is creating a
small wooden platform to somehow create an illusion of minimal height
and grandeur. All that you get though is something that you trip over,
will be a fashion faux pas in a few years and to my mind something
that looks shit anyway.

Absolutely right. In the end it just rots and looks horrible. Our house came with decking at the back. Last year I had to replace the beams as they where rotted and the board's where coming loose. Trust me if I had the money I would rip the stuff up and have proper slabs.

Unless you spend absolutely shedloads of money on the very best quality, these things rot in a couple of years, take loads of maintenance, are dangerous when wet and impossible to stand on when icy.
Nowt quite as good as a proper patio!
