I get the impression Icy you think players only sign for Brighton as a last resort !

Top class players? Yes because others pay more than us. That is not a moan just acceptance. Welbeck had a big question mark over his fitness before last season, so maybe he didn’t get better offers? Guesswork again but it was a very very late signing.

Who was the last quality proven PL player who chose us over a bigger club? Lallana? Struggling to think of another

Sicknote reputation and few better club options because of it? Guesswork but his stock is definitely up because of last season imo. Mid table clubs almost certainly interested now, were they last season?

Bit of a gloomy assessment isn't it? To counteract it, I'm going out on a limb and saying that he'll re-sign for us, and do so soon. He's enjoyed himself this season, can see the club is well run and that we can cater for his needs (manager's tactics suits his qualities, gets recognition as wiser, elder player with PL experience and knowhow to pass on to others, excellent sports science and medical team, etc), and he's not only played more with us, he's scored more too.
I expect he'll get a two year deal too, either that or a one year with an option.

It's odd isn't it? They are a couple of truisms about Danny Welbeck, namely: (1) he's really old, and (2) he's always injured.

Neither of which are especially true.

and we were lucky to get him...

After the transfer window had closed.
After the season had started.
After offering him a massive contract.
After all other striker options failed.

Luckily Danny's clearly a decent fella and a very talented footballist.

I would love to see him and Maupay playing as 'outside forwards' assuming an actual, full formed, grown up, professional forward is playing between them.

True, but Danny Welbeck has history in that department. A well known sicknote throughout most of his career alas.

That simply isn't true though. He has suffered three significant injuries during his career, all while at Arsenal; two knee injuries, affecting the 2015-16 and 2016-17 campaigns, and then a broken ankle in 2018-19 which required two surgeries. His number of league appearances over the last ten seasons is (with appearances across all club competitions in brackets):-

2011-12 - 30 (39)
2012-13 - 27 (40)
2013-14 - 25 (36)
2014-15 - 27 (37)
2015-16 - 11 (15)
2016-17 - 16 (20)
2017-18 - 28 (43)
2018-19 - 8 (14)
2019-20 - 18 (20)
2020-21 - 24 (24)

.
Or more likely - Potter wanted him all along as he added something different (height, experience) to his options, he wanted us - because of the coach, the set up, the competitive contract , he turned down other offers and was a target all summer. (Along with some others obviously that didn’t pan out).

Although i get where you're coming from, those stats kind of back up the other side of the arguement, until this season, he has only managed more than 20 games once since 2015.

I see a lot of people saying "i'd give him another year" some saying two years, but what if Danny Welbeck thinks he did enough last season and is now fit enough to warrant longer, how many would be willing us to offer a 3 year contract as one of our top earners? After all, we did it for Adam Lallana, why wouldn't Welbeck expect the same.

Danny Welbeck is free to think what he wants, but the only thing that matters is the concrete offers that he receives. If someone offers him a three-year deal, he'd be mad not to take it.

I doubt anyone will though.

Two year deal with the second year exercised on mutual milestones (performance and appearance related) being met in year 1 would be my preference in the off chance I overthrow PB in the next 6 weeks

To further burnish our reputation as a club where young players have the opportunity of advancement you could argue there's an optimal level of sicknoteness for your senior forward.

I’ve seen enough to offer Welbeck another year. Maybe even two.

Guy has been a model pro, surely a good influence at the club, and when fit has put in some incredible displays for us. Scored important goals. And has maybe been the most clinical of our forwards of late.

Yeah of course we know he’s not going to play 38 games a season. But the complete package is totally worth it to our club. And I daresay we’re a good fit for him too.

I doubt it too and to be honest, i wouldn't want us to, too big a risk, but i can see his contract expiring and him waiting to see what offers come about, if he waits too long, i think we would move on. We will find out soon enough.

I’m 100% with you. Personally, and I mat be wrong, I was bemused to see posters shitting it about other clubs like West Ham / Everton coming in for him. No chance. I’m 95% certain he’ll re-sign for us - certainly seemed that way in his interviews.

Am hoping he'll be here next season, but wouldn't be surprised to see Palarse step in and offer him something like 4 years at £100K+ a week.
Not that I think the aforementioned twitter account holds any validity whatsoever. Certainly not he worst guess we'll see some twelve year old troll making this summer.

With so many players out of contract I can see Palace being a team interested in Welbeck although they did just secure Benteke down to a two year £100k pw deal.
I’m sure that Palace’s main focus is trying to get their new manager in though so he can endorse the player acquisitions. I think the job will be unappealing enough without saying ‘ oh, and by the way we’ve already assembled your squad’.
