And once here are they really going to be able to send her back to a Syrian camp when Syria itself is looking to get rid of the stateless population of these camps, and I cant see Bangladesh taking her, if it came to that.

Who is funding all of this?

To get out ahead of 'why should us taxpayers fund her legal aid?' sentiment that this question feels like it is trying to point to, here is a twitter thread from the secret barrister in response to similar issues in the past

https://twitter.com/BarristerSecret/status/1213841989516644352 (London Bridge terrorist Usman Khan)
https://twitter.com/BarristerSecret/status/1249302814737694720 (Hillsborough commander David Duckenfield)

The first few tweets are the same then they digress.

If she is returning to be arrested and charged with terrorism offences then fine. Let her return.

If she wants to return for any other reason. Hell no. Let her rot.

She should never have had her citizenship revoked in the first place. Had it been managed appropriately at the time all this would have been forgotten. She should have been tried on terrorism offences when she requested to return in 2019. The illegal revoking of her citizenship was a human rights violation.

They had no intention of managing it appropriately. Just an opportunity to start another culture war for the government, its wrong but it wins votes and pretends "we're on your side".

Surely letting her return would ultimately put her at jeopardy as all the press will be camped outside wherever she is put and then the lynch mobs would be after her.

Probably safer for her to remain where she is.

There's a great article by the Secret Barrister where he/she points out that it's absolutely right and proper that Begum is granted legal aid. It goes into lots of detail but the closing paragraph is well worth quoting

"So when the Mail invites its readers to fulminate and howl and ask Why should the public pay for this awful woman’s legal aid?, the answer that should be given – by our Lord Chancellor, preferably, as the person with the statutory obligation to uphold the rule of law – is because that is the price of living under the rule of law. If you’d rather exist in a society where the rules are not applied equally, where your entitlement to a fair trial is dependent on the whims of government officials or the roar of the effigy-burning mob or the deepness of your pockets, there are plenty of countries out there willing to oblige."

Good article, yes certainly - not arguing with it. But, still there is a little voice inside me suggesting that the secret barrister also has at least half an eye on the several hundred pounds an hour plus good thing he/she (and his/her barrister colleagues) is on to!
