Quite is 'beginning to resign themselves.......' and as we know confirms we'd make a healthy profit on him over the £3m we paid - problem is SA aren't anywhere close enough in the world rankings (currently 71st) to make a permit issue likely. The same article also points to an incoming striker in January ('younger, more mobile version of Murray') and also suggests Potter would be happy for Murray to go to another club if he wants to continue playing (but stresses how helpful he's been to Neal and Aaron). Nothing surprising really.

I'm not sure the permit is the issue, more likely he is not any better than the players we already have of a similar size.
Trossard, Maupay and Connolly are all similar in stature, plus the addition of Mac Allister means we will be well stocked in little uns.
Sell Percy for a profit and buy someone bigger to balance the squad.
Don't disagree with that personally but I was quoting what was in the article and it does look as though Naylor is getting info from inside the club..............

Just my opinion that he suits the brief as a Murray replacement and is in our price range from a League where we like signing players.

So I've done a bit of hunting around about Percy Tau and worked out how he'd be able to play for us. (Hopefully this makes sense......)
Given that South Africa are not ranked in the top 50 in the world, he won't be able to qualify that way. They're currently in 71st place and for them to drop down 21 places it will take a lot of wins to achieve this, so that is out the window for now, well at least the 2020/21 season.
The only option now is through the points based system where he needs a minimum of 4 points. (See photo)
I have attached a screenshot of the criteria and points system for him to gain automatic qualification (Ignore part B, it's all too complicated). However after that he will go against a panel of three judges who will then give the final decision even once he has met the 4 point minimum.
The only criteria of the points based system he currently meets is his minutes played in the Belgian Jupiler League and Champions League. He needs to play in at least 30% of the total minutes available in each competition. In the Jupiler league he has played 824 minutes out of a possible 1800 which easily falls into the minimum of 30%. In the Champions League he has played 239 out of 540 minutes available, so again has played over 30% of the minutes needed.
That gives him 2 points so far, however to retain these points he will need to play over 30% of minutes for the rest of the season for both competitions. He will most likely do this.
Now on to the most important parts.
Given that we only paid £2.7m for him, that writes off his chances of gaining points through his transfer fee as he wouldn't get near the 50% minimum value of transfer fees in the PL. (See criteria screenshot for explanation)
Now the only way for him to gain the 2 extra points to reach the 4 points needed is through his salary. He would need to be in the top 50% of salaries in the premier league to gain the 2 points.
Here is where it gets interesting and where you would weigh up his worth...
The average premier league salary is currently at £61,000 per week. Our three highest paid players are Gross, Montoya and Jahanb on £50,000 per week. So for Percy to even have a chance of playing for us he will have to be our highest paid player... Percy's salary is currently £30,000 per week at Club Brugge so we would have to double his salary to play for us..
So this is what the board, Tony and Paul need to weigh up. Is Percy worth £60,000 per week? Is it a good investment? We will most likely have to increase other players salaries as they will have clauses to be the highest paid players in the club... Given that we only paid £2.7m for him it might be worth the investment. If he has one good season for us then his value will be ten fold of what we paid..."

Imagine doing all that research without mentioning the FA Exceptions Panel where Tau got a very good chance of getting through since he is a regular in his national team, played in the last Africa Cup of Nations and made appearances in the Champions League.

The exceptions panel makes their decision based on the points system which he was analysing. He was explaining the process basically.

First time that has made sense to me ... good man!
One small observation though. If Percy needs to be in the top 50% of most highly paid players, he won't need to earn the average wage as that will be skewed upwards by the top six + the Palarse squad. In all probability, he'd only need to be paid a rather derisory £40k, poor chap.

Are you absolutely sure about this?
As I've understood it, you either get or dont get a work permit from the FA based on this point system, but if the player dont get enough points, you can appeal to the FA Exceptions Panel who will then look at circumstances outside the points system, like reputation, participation in international tournaments, (in this case) South Africa not being top 50 ranked but still decent etc.

There’s basically a points system for the work permit, and then a second points system for the exceptions. All very bureaucratic.

So it comes down to the fact he needs a payrise to get a permit.
The club at this point decide whether he is worth the payrise, or whether it makes more financial sense to sell him.
With the talk of him 'being unlikely to get a permit' it appears they may have chosen the later... but we wait and see...

His current club haven’t even played him in 50% of league and CL minutes. Belgium league is well below PL standard so he’s very unlikely to be good enough to make a difference in the Premier League, and certainly not worth making him the highest paid player at the club.
