A GREAT pub might also have..

an app / order system to make food/drink order at your table, then have drinks ready when you reach the bar.. or table service?

text alert to let you know when food ready to collect (in busy places)

bouncy castles, for adults only!

At least one old codger who has sat in the same spot and drunk the same drink since before the current landlord.

An old fashioned till operated by someone who does all the adding up in their head, none of this touchscreen crap.

The only substantial food available is ham sandwich or cheese sandwich. You cannot get a ham and cheese sandwich without buying one of each. They are already made and sitting under a glass cloche. They are not particularly tasty but are served immediately and cost a pound.

There should be a selection of the underworld from wide boys up to proper gangsters. They will all be perfectly friendly and even buy you the odd round. One without a nose for trouble would not really notice them, except when a couple of young men in smart shoes walk in when they roll their eyes. This is shortly followed by a barmaid saying "evening officers - will you be staying for a drink?"

They serve good beer - that this may also be real ale is incidental.

Lock-ins. With smoking.

An old brass with a mouth like a sailor.

An old fashioned jukebox that broke down years ago and they had the good sense to never repair.

Outside khazis. Reasonably clean, fully functioning and draughty.

All this with nobody under the age of 30 in sight.

For me the simple criteria is no matter what type of pub (real ale, football etc) if after a couple of visits, you'd be happy to walk in there completely by yourself and have a drink and feel at home.

Since the smoking ban any pub you walk into that doesn't stink of piss and body odour.

A good selection of craft beer, IPA and double IPA to work my way through.

No fecking dart board - which seem to always be occupied these day by a 70 year old man and his son drinking orange juice.

A beer garden that actually catches the sun.

Heading for shore
No children
Good range of beers and whiskeys reasonably priced
No bright lighting
Hearty bar snacks, sarnies etc (simple hot food also allowed but not a necessity)
A dart board
Decent live music one or two nights a week
An eccentric landlord/lady and a barmaid with big tits and gappy teeth who caresses the palm of your hand when she gives you your change
