Aww...that's sad to hear - he was such a cool guy. He always put me in mind of Jon Lord. Top band, Woodbine, were.

I can only remember Woodbine playing there, with Stu Parks (?) who was/is also a taxi driver?

Scary? Yes. :lolol: Not Spanish, though, as they moved here from Cyprus. Pepa banned a LOT of folk - some for a short while, others, permanently. She had a very annoyingly excellent memory for faces.

...and run a mile if they got separated from their 'firm'. :lolol:

Indeed, most of them young, spotty, pissed-up oiks who 'hunted' in packs. Sad bunch, really.

Well yes. :lolol: I'll rephrase the question: Was it a rock club in '74? I think John and Pepa took it over in '76, but what was it prior to '76, when you went?

I concur - it went on a lot, but I'll still say that it wasn't a thing carried out by the rock club customers - more the 'lads' out on the piss in other venues. Most of us were too busy listening/headbanging to music, than cause grief to gay folk.

Ha! I worked at The New Regent, next door, for a while, and Sunday night there was 'rock night'. Was always amusing to see two totally different cultures piling out at the end of the night, and mingling in West Street. If I remember correctly, there was rarely any aggravation, either, as both...

Was it still a rock club, in '74? For anyone interested, there's Facebook group for the Years. :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/2412138951

Probably the only one not to get banned by Pepa, at some point, too. :)

Ha! Yes, yellow was their go-to colour. I was using a yellow stunt kite on the Hove Lawns when a swarm came over - it became invisible. :lolol:

Glass? We only got given plastic...and you really don't want to know how badly they were washed-up, when I worked behind the bar. ;)

No, I remember it as in the pic, but not sure when it expanded. Had almost forgotten The Belvedere, though.

Was a regular, three times a week, from 1979 until 1986 - went to BHASVIC too, oddly enough. Never been a rock club like it. :)
