    They were referring to the check out bombshell. Skiing in France at Easter the hotel had this notice in a couple of prominent places and in checking out they gently persuade you to pay it. Apparently, these new services charges in the US, UK and continent do go to the staff one way or another...

    R4 You & Yours covered this last week. In the UK they’re unenforceable, simply don’t pay them. They said Yanks are happy to pay them, as they don’t the British/European thing of carefully scrutinising and arguing over a bill.

    The very helpful @Kinky Gerbils recommended the premier outlets Woodbury Common mall, one hour from Times Square up the Hudson direction. Pre-book the bus, from Times Square. Great bargains, all the brands and sign up once you get there for further significant discounts.

    We only realised Bryant Park was there, on the final walk back to our hotel, so never got to really see it. It was just two streets away! Next time.

    It is. Honouring the deceased at the memorial is a totally different experience. The museum gives the back story to individual lives on the day, including the amazing emergency services.

    We did just that last July. Chinatown, a museum called Tenement, Little Italy, from West Village to Grid Iron, quiet areas of Central Park, The Dakota, round the CBD, across Brooklyn Bridge and historic Brooklyn. 25,000 steps a day and I’m not svelte :). Got us talking to New Yorkers.

    Loved I think for: - An eco paradise, in the middle of a megalopolis. A clever idea from clever locals. I’m into the type of planting and recognised special prairie flowers. Far better than lawns. - An insight 25’ above ground into the West Side past and gentrified now.

    Very whistle stop. Don’t do the Statue of Liberty. Instead: Top Of The Rock observatory, book ahead to get a just before sunset time, seeing everything including the Empire State lit up and the sunset. The 9-11 Museum and memorial. One World Trade Centre. @Herr Tubthumper will be along to...
