I went to the same place in the mid-80’s a couple of times, purely for the one lunchtime drink with girlfriends and mates. Stepping outside hours later, everyone absolutely smashed. Great memories. By then it was called Stenos.

They still were in the 80’s, I got invites to Lombard and L&G xmas parties, nightclubs hired for the night, everyone wildly drunk out of skins.

One of my older brothers and a mate of his worked for one year at NW Castle Square after leaving school in 1974. I remember three things about his time there. - a translucent globe NW piggy bank, given as a gift to me. - Laurence Olivier was a customer. - they said there was pervy assistant...

Going anecdotally by the odd incident in the Argus for example, it’s definitely crept back. Lesbian couples attacked by male thugs elsewhere in the UK too. I love stories like that in your first para. I ‘know’ of a few similar incidents in the hetero male world back in the 80’s …. chavvy...

No Queensbury’s Rules or street chivalry, they’re tall tales ….. I’ve seen that nonsense posted on nsc. Always a coward’s punch.

Yep, that. Thick as shit scummers heading home. The age old story, they hadn’t pulled and couldn’t take it, so then either attack someone in West Street and/or a gay person in St James’s Street.

Can I just say, gay-bashing was a big thing. Various gf’s knew loads of gay men, many took brutal kickings in east Brighton from neanderthals. Sorry.

Bolts must’ve brought in their own booze. They had ice cold cans of Colt45, beautiful stuff. As a lifetime night owl, I was gutted when it closed at 11 or 12pm. The old licensing laws were a joke …. thank you to Tony Blair I think for ridding us of the WW1 nonsense.

I did go to few gay clubs, with girlfriends (said in overly deep voice) or mate when every one club was shut in the week. Bolts (Sunday nights at The Pink Cocunut) was literally the only choice, but they played incredible dance music. These days I'd be called Woke or a Virtue Signaller.

I always did the town centre. Uniquely? I’ve never been a pub/locals boozer, but drank gallons on hundreds of pub/clubbing nights. Peak was mid 80’s - Tuesdays (Top Rank or Coasters), Thursday, Friday AND Saturday all the usual clubs. Must’ve had a healthy liver :lolol: Fagans was a mid-80’s...

Shades Wine Bar was just the SW corner of the RPT, literally a wine bar with darker lighting. But colloquially the entire pub was soon called Shades, less of a mouthful.

Did you always have a nice feeling for some pubs over others? I felt so comfortable in Shades, Fagans, Frock & Jackett and most clubs (a love of dancing, music and staying out very late). Swifts was just okay imho, too brightly lit, often too crowded. But special days. I did it on and off...
