if Gus said we won't extend his contract unless he wants to, then it's good news - and it's understandable that he's not here...
I can understand that, but why didn't they extend his contract months ago under the same premise - ie, if you do need to go, we just want a fair fee. I suppose if we had extended it earlier, and he had got injured, we'd have looked silly.

Players that are worth money that are transfer listed are always being forced to stay until a buyer is found, that's how the business works. You don't let multi million pound assets walk off. If it really was as simple as extending, why didn't we do that 3 months ago, then sell him if he wanted...
You're reading too much into it. Gus was saying he was 90/95% sure he'd stay, which suggests we needed his agreement, we couldn't simply extend the contract. If it was as simple as extending the contract, we'd have done it months ago.
