In all seriousness, it could be a viable alternative to post counts since if someone new comes along and contributes positively they could receive a flurry of 'approvals' that highlights them as someone worth listening to. Whereas those who troll and abuse will quickly receive 'disapprovals'...

Sorry, I think we're getting lost in words here. You can either 'approve' of someone or 'disapprove'. When you do this you influence their reputation points - upwards when you approve, downwards when you disapprove.
