Don't always agree with Boycott, but he made a really good point that picking a test player isn't always about their average in the first class game. It's about seeing whether they is a certain something about them, whether their temperament is right, they've got that determination to succeed...
That's a really good point. If we've been under 50 runs for 3 wickets in 8 of the last 14 innings, then a lot of Root's batting has effectively been at no.4 if not no.3 during his fine spell of form. Would be really interesting to equate his 50's and 100's with how old the ball was when he came...
There was a stat somewhere that we have been 3 down before getting to 50 runs something like 8 times in the last 10 tests.
That said that doesn't hide the fact England have looked a better side this summer than they have done for 18months or so. To actually win tests against top sides with that...
The impressive thing for me was following Cardiff how quickly the Aussie quicks have suddenly clicked as a bowling unit. In particular Hazelwood's control and accuracy really gave Johnson free license to bowl with real aggression and freedom. Of course leads of 500 runs during the match when...
Just need to chip away at them here. Restricting them to sub 550 is still game on in this match. NZ got 523 here and still lost at the start of the summer.
Been a while since we've had a pitch as dull flat and boring as this. Both pitches for the New Zealand series and the one for the first test produced exciting enthralling result matches in different ways. Last summer only 2 of the 7 test matches in England were drawn.
14 test matchs in 2015...
Really? You don't want to know anymore about his trip to Vegas? How he got on, how far he got, how he felt when he lost. I thought he was incredibly restrained in not talking even more about himself....
Not so sure. Held up well against NZ, only the first morning and Day 5 did it look a problem to bat on. Day 4 England scored 355 runs for 4 wickets, with Cook getting 162. It still wasn't that bad on Day 5, just that NZ gave away some poor wickets and succumbed to the pressure.
Where was our big advantage after the Cardiff test?
A. Our bowling attack.
What do we do with our momentum going into the 2nd test?
A. Prepare a flat lifeless wicket.
Idiots*.
*granted the preparation for this pitch would have started before the first test, but still, they've had 4 or 5...
