A mate of mine saw Joy Division in Leeds at the first Futurama festival in 1979.
I remember asking him about them at the time (IC alive at the time) and he told me they were 'shit'.
A couple of years ago I reminded him about this, and was astonished when he said they were 'brilliant'.
I raised an eyebrow.

My view:

They didn't have much impact till IC died.
I was a compulsive Peel listener and JD were a bit m'eh, compared with bands I loved at the time:
the Comsat Angels, The Cure, Wah!, Come in Tokio and The Fall.
I thought IC's singing was a bit poundshop Jim Morrison. Trying too hard.....slightly wanky US accent...

So I missed their first album which in my view (now) is far superior to the dirgey Closer.
Having fully dismissed them a mate lent me the live double album in early 82. Still.
Wow.
That is brilliant.
So I like that and the first album but never listen to Closer.

Just doing a bit of research.....it says on wiki that Hooky was the Guitarist and Barney was bassist in Joy division, then they swapped over when they became New Order.

And yet here we see Barney playing a six string guitar with JD. Anyone know the true facts?

I love music. It’s always great hearing something that hits you between the eyes and has always stayed with me.
First time I heard ‘Me and Mrs Jones’ on the radio, Space Ritual live, ‘Purple Haze’ on a juke box, ‘Neat Neat Neat’ by the Damned, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ on the Old Grey Whistle test. Early Oasis.
This was another, watching this.

Which Wikipedia page are you reading? The Joy Division one is completely unambiguous that Hook was the bassist and Sumner the Guitarist.

I reject this. It’s accurate if you only think of New Order’s poppy stuff, but absolutely not universally true.

The earlier New Order would still be living in the ‘Joy Division‘ house

Precisely. The first Peel session was pure JD. I was very excited about it, and listened while in the bath living in Crawley at the time.

Fair enough. That doesn't suggest they swapped roles when they became New Order though, just that in the last year or so they sometimes played each other's instrument.

From the dates (79-80) I'd guess they both played guitar and bass parts when recording Closer.
Yes that seems reasonable. And it seems you are correct. The Wiki entry is therefore unequivocal and incorrect.

Here is the roster for Closer:

Wiki has that wrong. Hooky was always the bass player.

I don’t think it’s that serious :lolol:

New Order moved on pretty quickly from the Joy Division house though.

To be fair, I know that McCartney sometimes played guitar on Beatles records, and Lennon or Harrison sometimes played bass, but I'd still be pretty comfortable describing McCartney as the bassist.

There's a vaguely amusing story about Pete Townshend hastily recording a cover of Under My Thumb in support of the Stones after their drug bust, and interrupting Entwistle's honeymoon to check he was OK with it being released without him playing on it because he could be so touchy about being The Who's Bassist.

Fun story - was responding to some thread on Twitter a few months back about great/influential bassists, my response was along the lines of;

“Carlos D of Interpol - took the melodic template laid down by Peter Hook and developed/expanded on it massively.”

Who was the first person to like and retweet this? Ol’ Hooky himself.

I remember showing this video to my daughter when she was young and it had the same first impression on her as it did me.
We saw New Order together when she was at uni in Bristol a few years ago, it was when they did a few Joy Division songs. A great concert.
A good man is our Peter, who still walks on the other side of the street if he sees Bernard walking towards him in Alderly Edge.
