I’m saying it very quietly, possibly not quite up to it at this level?
Celtic are so dominant he got easier chances and had more time, you just don’t get that in the PL.
It’s all about getting up to speed imo. You did write off JPVH early doors and I think (hope) you’re wrong on this one

Yes, he was terrible initially, but has improved to be one of our best players.
I was also pleased when we signed CMS.

MOR has had more games and arguably started better than JPvH, but he has taken a step back IMO, and has plateau’d a bit.

Hoping you’re right though after a good preseason.

Could do with being more selfish.
seems to pass rather than shoot, way too often.
Agree. I think his confidence is down and he is opting to pass when he could be more direct. Had a great chance in second half but passed straight to defender instead of burying it. His awareness seems fine; it is his execution that is missing.

Nothing special so far.
Personally I think he would relish the challenge of improving.
But wouldn’t be surprised if he went abroad on a season long loan.

It’s also difficult to know where he will play if we have a fully fit squad. The number 10 role has Rutter and now Gruda ahead of him, in my opinion.

Though at the moment we can assume half our squad will be injured at any given time.

This is a squad built for Europe for sure. If we don’t get in, a lot of our players will struggle to fit in barring injuries.

I like the way he receives the ball - seems to be able to get it under control quickly no matter how it's fired at him. Also takes up good positions. Just seems a bit lightweight at times. Pleased he's getting a run in the team. Maybe regular games, a bit more confidence and a full preseason will help him prosper next season.

Sky Sports suggests he might be off?

*if* Brighton indicate they’re interested in selling - that’s a big if

The actual SSN report makes clear this is speculative on Everton’s part - see colored text

Everton keen on O'Riley but expect competition

Latest from Sky Sports News' Lyall Thomas:
Everton would be keen on Matt O’Riley this summer - if Brighton sanction a move - but expect to face competition from big European clubs.
There is uncertainly around the midfielder after he was an irregular part of Fabian Hurzeler’s team in his first season, in part due to an injury at the start of the campaign, while also playing out of position.
Despite this, O'Riley scored twice and assisted three times in the Premier League - and he started six out of the last eight games, with a match-winning assist against Liverpool and a penalty against Tottenham.
The situation has alerted other clubs but it is not clear whether Brighton would be willing to sell at this stage, as they see him as a player that would contribute significantly next season.
Some big clubs from across Europe, notably from Serie A, have tracked him for some time and are thought to be ready to make a move if Brighton give any indication they are willing to let him go.
O'Riley only joined Brighton from Celtic last summer, having been a star player in Scotland for three seasons. He also has two caps for Denmark.

This is a very difficult one.

He seems like a top level professional who is smart and well liked but an early injury meant that his game time was limited for the season as others took their chances.

At centre midfield next season he may have to complete with:

Baleba
Hinshelwood
Gomez
Wieffer
Ayari
Milner (if he signs an extension)
Yalcouyé

At No.10 next season, he may have to compete with:

Pedro
Georginio
Gruda
Buonanotte
Enciso
Hinshelwood
Gomez
Sarmiento
Tzimas

Personally, I'd prefer to see Buonanotte given a chance as I just think that he has a higher ceiling. Could we get our money back on O'Reilly?

No way should we be getting rid. No way.

I think the issue is the amount of players we have in his position.

Even those people, like me, who think he's been crap, can probably see there's a player in there and it's a little bit early to write him off completely. That injury did shaft him.

But if we can get most of our money back it's tempting.

It’s possibly that there’s a very very good player in there. I hope he gets time to prove himself. I’d probably rather sell Buonanotte than O’Riley at this point with the emergence of Gruda.

A loan to a lower level PL team would seem a sensible idea - or to upper level Championship; see if he can hack it in England. Decent offer from Everton - get our money back, or a bit more, would be well worth considering. We can't expect a 3 or 4 hundred % mark-up on all our not quite so successful deals.
