And if we had a rule where no-one was allowed to respond to the thread if they had, ever, ever, dodged a fare then we may be a bit short of replies.
Not suggesting it isn't an issue, but Robert Jenrick being the messenger kind of makes it lose its meaning.
Still, I'm guessing he has started his leadership campaign early.

I used to commute on the bus at odd times, off peak to get to and from work.
Now I commute at school leaving time in the afternoon and peak time in the morning.
f*** me.
It’s Hellish. I honestly didn’t realise, as I chonckled peacefully along at 7pm and 5am.
There are some real ****s out there.
You know, Middle aged white people get a lot of stick these days but at least we can travel 30 mins without managing to piss everyone else on the bus off.

Seriously though, that sort of shit's gone on for years. Nobody's paid enough to deal with it and the cost of the few extra tickets you'd pick up wouldn't be worth paying for it to be enforced properly.
I'm sure we could dig out articles from the 19th century complaining about the same sort of thing.
And I’m sure you’re right; but my example is just a microcosm of the bubbling entitlement of “I want it, it’s mine, because the rules don’t apply to me”.
These aren’t 19th century gutter snipes stealing a slice of pie cooling on a windowsill. These are people growing up in a society where they have the belief that rules don’t apply to them.
Want a new bike? Well, I’m not getting a job in McDonalds or a paper round, saving up my money, and working hard to buy one. I’ll just take someone else’s - I deserve nice things too. And the police don’t even turn up for petty thefts (from personal experience).
There are still good people, the vast majority in fact, but there are a subset of society - and crime numbers bear out that it is larger than ever - who truly feel the world owes them something for nothing.
When I regularly commuted to London before Covid I ended up opting for a first class season ticket.
The Great Entitled of Bromley South would home in on the first class seats daily.
On a crowded train one morning a guard (late 50s, shaven head, looked like a boxing referee) asked a woman to pay or move because she didn't have a first class ticket.
"Well you'll have to find me a seat" she said.
Guard explained how the land lay. She did soon shift with much tutting. The guard raised one eyebrow.
OK that's an easy win.
Here is a tougher one.
A 20 something mad looking tattooed thug got on at Sittingbourne and plonked into first class.
The train was near empty.
The guard saw his ordinary ticket and got out his machine and charged him £30.
Bloke paid up.
I was quite taken aback.
But...this is what doing your f***ing job looks like
First class has been abolished on my line now.
I used to like it.
A regular commuter was an old boy who, I eventually learned, was on his way for a sitting in the house of Lords.
Despite my somewhat rough appearance, he was always civil.
Was very sweet to the occasional mum and kids, taking a bit of the piss, too. Patrician.
My personal beef is personal. My autism means that being crowded, having to endure loud phone calls and monstrous BO can tip me into a spasm that can morph into rage.
First class was the only solution.
The guards did used to police the seating but they do f*** all these days. The company probably figures a few piss takers costs less than curating the payments with active staff.
Anyway, Jenrick is a bumptious prick who seemingly wants to usurp Khan as London Mayor.

But for a lot of people it is.
I wonder if it really is that, though, for most, anyway.
I suspect most of these people know that taking something that belongs to someone else is an ethically wrong thing to do. But they also know the risk to themselves in terms of getting caught and suffering some kind of consequence is near-zero, so "f*** it".
When it comes to fare-dodging or shoplifting, I guess as much as they think about it at all, is that they are taking from big corporations that can afford it. They'd see it as a victimless activity

That’s what politicians do unfortunately and that is his job now, To call out what is happening in the country, now that someone else is in charge.
TFL and all the enforcement officers are completely under the control and funding of the Mayor, which is why he is calling out Khan

Right, but the underlying social issues are wider than London, as are the crime rates.
I don’t think Khan’s doing a great job, but I similarly think Pep couldn’t have won the title with this year’s Southampton side. Not without a huge increase in budget.
And if you can't afford it, it's okay to steal it? Because it's your right to have it?
