⛔ Football Banning Order for anti-Semitic abuse

A woman has received a three-year Football Banning Order following antisemitic abuse at the Amex.

The woman visited a hospitality lounge before the Fulham fixture in October 2023.

She approached a restaurant manager and made an antisemitic comment, gesturing towards a table where a Jewish couple were sat.

Officers were called to remove her from the restaurant and found she was intoxicated through alcohol. She continued to use offensive language while officers took her details.

She appeared at Brighton Magistrates Court on 13 May 2025 and was found guilty of causing religiously aggravated harassment.

She was ordered to pay a £120 fine, £650 court costs, and a £96 surcharge. The court also imposed a three-year Football Banning Order. This restricts her access to attend professional football matches at home and abroad.

Speaking after the case, Sussex Police’s Dedicated Football Officer PC Gregg Marshall said:

“This was a shocking case, anti-Semitic language has no place in football or in society. During this case we have liaised closely with Brighton and Hove Albion to ensure the club have the full facts of the investigation for their own action to be taken.”

A spokesperson for Brighton & Hove Albion added:

"We echo those comments. There is no place for this such behaviour, and in line with our zero-tolerance approach to any form of xenophobia, the individual will also be subject to an indefinite ban from the club.

"We'd also like to place on record our thanks Sussex Police for their professionalism and support in dealing with such an unpleasant case."

Three year banning order? Life surely. Being openly racist to innocent people - or in this case antisemitic - is absolutely unacceptable.

I’m drunk all the time, and I’ve never once in my life felt the need to do something hurtful like that.

She got off very lightly and can do one.

What does someon’s “innocence “ have to do with anything?

Antisemitic abuse or any other form of discrimination is illegal regardless of someone’s guilt or innocence.

Well done the Club for acting decisively and firmly.

Three year banning order for any football match.

An indefinite ban at the Amex, which may never get lifted.

I think the term is being used to provide the context i.e. this person picked on a couple who were simply minding their own business.

Might well be a three year banning order in law, but the club will have her cards marked for life. Nothing's surer hurrah

Context is irrelevant

The insinuation is antisemitism/racism is ok if people aren’t minding their own business.

It simply doesn’t matter what the target of the abuse is doing, whether they are ‘innocent’ or involved in some kind of disagreement with the abuser, whether you have a personal grievance with them or not. It doesn’t even matter if they are a convicted criminal, racism is racism, period.

What is important that all forms of racism are treated with equal abhorrence and that we all agree there is never a justification for discrimination on the grounds of race or colour etc (which I think we all do)

As said, the Club acted firmly and rightly.

The mention of intoxication does seem like it's being presented as a bit of an excuse.

But for me, that merely means that she 'said out loud' what she normally thinks, the grubby little racist.

Promptly? The incident was in October 2023.
I would guess that's just the slowness of the legal process.

The case came to court ahout two weeks ago, and Sussex Police only published details today:

I removed the name of the woman involved in my post, not because I have any sympathy towards her situation, but I just didn't feel like I wanted to be part of the name-and-shaming pile-on.
