Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I've seen the hand-held scanners and people scanning stuff before putting it in their bags at the Asda Marina Supermarket, but thought it looked a bit too technical for me. I know someone who works in the shop, and she said to me that once you give it a go, you're a scanner for life!
I thought, sod it - I'll be brave and give it a go. Life-changing! Today being a Bank Holiday, and I was there mid-day, there were quite a few people there.
After bleeping my way through the aisles, putting my goods in my bags, I walked past queues of people at the tills and self check-outs, to a deserted dedicated Self-Scan check-out area. Scanned the QR code on the till, scanned the bar code which then appeared on the hand-scanner, paid the amount via the contactless method, and that was me done.
No "Unknown item in the bagging area", or other time consuming obstacles at the self checkout, no queueing behind old ladies that smell like the Goldstone North Stand's men's toilets. Your shopping is already bagged up, so away you go.
******* marvellous!!!!

.....and one more lady at the check-out loses her job!

O.K. I admit it - I do it myself! It's so much quicker. :(

Now the flip side of the coin, as a Store Manager in retail it’s a bloody disaster. Thousands on thousands of pounds of stock stolen through here weekly

I've been using 'scan as you shop' at Tesco since they introduced it many many years ago.

Other than it being much quicker, you can also check the price as I frequently find items have wrong price labels on shelves in Tesco - or rather the shelves have been restocked incorrectly.

probably a little offset by idiots like me who decide I want something else, replace the original something on the shelf and don't remove it from the handset. Waitrose have made a fortune from me. At least I no longer leave a bag full of shopping at the check-out.

I would have felt sorry for the Sedan-chair carriers who lost their jobs after the invention of the wheel!

I'd love to do it but I've got one of those 'guilty' looking faces which means I'll get stopped leaving the store and waste 20 minutes whilst the security go through my shopping.
Can anyone do it though or do you need to be a store member?

Gets approved / removed when you
Load your shopping onto the screen the light goes red and an attendant comes over
Eventually or reasonably quickly? I generally use the self-checkout and there are staff around who attend within a few seconds. Are there dedicated staff for the area?

Almost immediately in our local Tesco…….always staff around waiting to do it. The terminals do scan as you shop and self checkout so it’s the same staff

I have joined the Asda Rewards scheme, so my email is with them. I can't remember if I had to give my phone number as well.
However, the first time I used it (today was my third time), I needed to enter my email address and mobile phone number. The last two times, just the phone number.

Thinly veiled look-at-me-I-shop-at-Waitrose boast. Good work.

I don't know if the packers would spend 10 minutes finding the right pineapple, or the exact size and greenness of bananas!
