They wanted it more than us, it’s that simple. Perhaps the most disappointing thing this season has been the lack of hunger I’ve seen again and again. I think it’s an issue with having a young squad, their heads tend to drop easily. I don’t think that’s a management issue, it’s experience. It’s no wonder we look much better with Veltman and Welbeck playing.

Palace have been crap for large periods this season, but they have the experience of Lerma, Mateta, Guehi etc. which allow the younger talents to shine a bit more. That gives them an edge in those pressure-cooker games. When we have the same, with Veltman and Welbeck playing, we tend to look a lot better. And of course they have a huge supply of confidence at the moment, that counts for a lot. As long as they don’t win the cup, I’m happy to not think about them from here on in.

We need to look at ourselves first. We need better athletes in defence who can deal with those counter attacks. And we could do with another experience player in midfield IMO, just to help guide the youngsters a bit better and help them settle in games such as yesterday, where there was a lot of endeavour, but not much direction or control. Jorginho on a free from Arsenal might be worth a look in the summer, for example. That gives us some stability in these games, and the confidence in the rest of the youngsters should flow from there.

And, unfortunately, I think there’s a few players like Igor and Adingra who in all honesty aren’t up to it. No point in depth if the depth is no good.

There wasn't a lot between the teams yesterday . However, Palace had pretty much their best XI out and we didn't. It's not Palace's fault that our injury list is horrendous , they just took advantage of it.

They finished the game with 9 men, no centre backs and Joel Ward. Injuries can only be so much to blame. We were abject
