If that’s the only opportunity he is being given when we’re 3 goals up, why did we move McConnville on? He was perfectly capable of that role.

I thought it was common knowledge that he wouldn’t sign a new deal, so January was our last chance to get a fee?

Edit: ignore - very late to the party

3 centre backs against a team that hasn’t scored in nearly 800 minutes?

You’d think Cashin would start but his cameo V Villa was alarming. Too small, too slow and that won’t change. That had nothing to do with being eased in.

Yes this is a discussion so it of course is very hypothetical, but I just see it personally as some young players are seeing a lot of traffic between U21 and First Team. I don’t believe that is positive for a club, that attracts a lot of talent due to its pathway to first team football.
I'm not sure of your thinking here Jack. You seem to be saying that we may struggle to bring in young talent, because we are so good at bringing in young talent.

Personally, I think we probably should be looking at an outrageous and slightly outlandish back 3. Wieffer on the right of it, Dunk in the middle of it and Pervis to the left. Just out and out attack. We're going to have the ball, we need ball players in those CB positions and let's get Joao Pedro and Welbeck very high, very central. It's a simple game tomorrow - we have to score the goals to batter into submission a useless team. Time for tears from Lineker!

Yeah even I had to read that a few times. What I think I mean is that it could change the perception that we are a good club for bringing through young talent, and we could have a bad reputation for it. Thus pushing players away, because they no longer see us as having a good pathway to the first team.

I am somewhat concerned that Fab is taking inspiration from a Gareth Southgate lecture for this game according to an Argus article :lolol:

Didn't we do they same thing with that CH from Pompey (Clarke ?) . Signed him any never played him and has been sold or out on loan (Derby ?). All very strange.
Loaned to Derby for two seasons, then loaned to West Brom and finally sold to Middlesbrough.

And, the final twist in the Matt Clarke tale is Derby bought him in January to replace the outgoing Eiran Cashin.

Some Derby fans, including one on here I think, consider Clarke an upgrade on what they had!

I can agree with parts of that. This season we've had 0 new academy products play (Lewis, Solly, Jack and Fergie already "established").

Not quite good enough, but will happen from time to time. As long as it doesn't become a prolonged thing where the wall between first team and academy is too thick and filled with imported 19-20-year-olds from here and there. We should be aiming to introdue at least two academy players every season though, or our reputation will fade in that area.

In the case of Mcconnville I think it was just a mutual feeling that the road for him was too long, and maybe his call up for Northern Ireland kind of kickstarted his ambitions and made him more eager to go.

Is there any top-flight team, Barcelona aside (who have the best academy in the world), which has a steady stream of players from their academy to being first team regulars?

Wow! Writing off Cashin for being caught upfield when we were chasing the game. Whether or not he plays the degree of castigation based on 20 minutes playing time is ridiculous.

Very much this. However, if he doesn't start tomorrow at CB you would worry that he's not looking good in training and/or is a long way from fitness. If he's not up to it not sure I like the idea of moving Baleba or Wieffer to an position they are not used to.

The Dutch giants always do it, same with the Portuguese. Usually some of these are OK PL class already in their first or second season. Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid and defo some others in Spain. Arsenal are good at it, other English top teams are generally ok at it as well. Most French teams. In Germany I think it is more spread out.

Obviously it is much more difficult in England than in some other countries. Hard to play street football in the winter so there's less players who add those hundreds of hours of playing around. Countries like France and Spain simply produce a higher number of good players.

Then there's the problem of Premier League being very good and competitive although it feels like teams are now increasingly interested in bringing forth young players since its so difficult to go down. Look at West Ham now with Potter. With the results they've had through the season, they should be battling for their lives to avoid relegation... instead GP can just throw in some random kids now and then because their season is dead. United are probably going to the same thing soon.

I posted this last week:-

I'd be very surprised if March started a game this season.

From Brian Owen's live report of the presser, I can't imagine we see March as anything other than a second-half sub for the remaining games:-

Wouldn’t Cashin have played against Leicester last season? Don’t know but that’s where Leicester were last season and next. What’s the problem?

Mcconville is starting for the first time tonight for Norwich v Burnley.

Wonder where Cashin would be now if we’d signed him in Aug 2023. - we had agreed a fee but it was too late on Deadline Day for a medical so he returned to Derby after 6 hours in a Starbucks, to get them promoted from L1.
