We signed him from a team in 20th in the Championship. And I severely doubt he’s solely responsible for their *checks notes* eleven wins out of 39 games.

I’m sure it was that , but EC was always going to be horribly exposed (as were others) for me I would have gone 3 at the back with EC if I had to bring him on in this situation..
It's exactly that.
Dunk was blowing, and he doesn't have the benefit of a week off before he has to go again.
I had previously written that I wouldn't be surprised if Cashin was moved on in the summer having never played for us, and I suspect that may well have been the case if we weren't down to the proverbial bare bones at the back.

Dunk had to come off, what were the other options? Push Pervis to CB and a midfielder to LB?

Maybe .. I understand that it was probably pre arranged for Dunk to get an hour and come off .. so I would have gone 3 including EC.. maybe Perv, JPVH and EC, maybe Wieffer or Baleba .. either way, I just think it was a really horrible time to come on , in a significant jump in standard and would look to protect player who I might need god forbid anything happens to Lewis or JP

Veltman can play CB if he gets fit. Jack H played centre back in youth football. Solly can obviously play left back if needed. Tasker, who has been on the bench the last two games, is a right back who has played CB but likes to push up.
People keep comparing him to JPvH as having a rocky debut, but I really don't think the two are comparable
van Hecke had had a year on loan at another club but that was his only real taste of professional football. Cashin has played over 100 games for Derby County. He's not some youngster we've plucked from the U23s and asked to "do your best, son", he's supposed to be a first-team ready footballer who we paid good money for. We signed him at a point when Igor was already out for the season and knowing that Dunk and Webster were both dodgy on the fitness front, he's only ever been one twisted ankle away from the first XI.
I am not, and from what I can see on this thread nobody else is, writing him off as a player for us in perpetuity. But the club will have expected better, and there's only so far excuses can go. He was shocking tonight, and we need to accept that. You can claim it was first day nerves or rustiness or whatever, but to deny he was very poor does a disservice to him and the club, as well as making those claiming it look foolish.

I think the comparisons aren’t about their experience, but the reactions of contributors here to players playing their first minutes in the PL.. that’s my comparison anyway..
of course I did .. and I’ve seen Dunk do similar. I’m not defending his performance, I just can’t agree that I should write him off based on his first 30 mins of PL football in the context in which it came about. You feel very differently.. crack on ..

The scouts said he was poor and couldn’t handle the pace of the premier league, the data said he was in the top of his optics in the championship. Maybe it’s time to stop playing moneyball and listen to some people who’ve played the game.

Absolutely one of the worst pieces of business we’ve ever done, could have signed him for £3m in 2022, but had a meltdown over the fee, so signed him for £9m three years later.
Hes a spread bet purchase. I doubt , given the players ahead of him, he was supposed to be in the first team. He's just supposed to turn a profit.
I thought he was nice on the ball, and passed nicely. But there is no chance while I have a hole in my arse that his physique can be a premier league footballer. It's just not going to happen.
Anyone could have made the mistake he made today, but you can see its unrealistic to think he's going to be a first team player.
