Probably like many NSC users and millions UK wide myself and indoors along with family all members of the non smoking fraternity, and the obvious health question was put to bed years ago. However from a libertarian POV what is next de-caf tea and coffee, individual alcohol quota's just where do you draw the line ?

I’d ban the sale of alcohol from shops, only pubs, bars and restaurants.

In 2021 smoking was estimated to be costing the NHS £2.5 billion.

Two and a half billion pounds.

The ban is a good thing.

As an aside I wonder if people like Liz "The Lettuce" Truss would be crying "BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR FREEEEEEDOMS!?!" if the subject were legalisation of cannabis.

not really a smoking ban though. it's an incrementing age limit on buying product. having seen the effects of 16/18 yo limits on those under the age taking up the habit, we can be sure it will have dubious effect.
enforecement will be interesting. current age cards will be ineffective, will we see a call for ID card renewed yearly for easy proof of age?

Can’t help thinking that this is electioneering gubbins. Prohibition has never worked, how long have drugs been illegal? It is already illegal for under 18s to vape yet over 100,00 every year try it out. It will make the black market bigger so someone will get rich.

It isn't. Labour supports it. The only people to 'win' electorally from this, if there is a backlash, is Farage and chums.

I'd love to point the finger at Sunk for electioneering, but on this occasion....

I think we should ban, banning. Does that mean I get banned?

In 2023-24 it is estimated that tobacco duties will raise £10.4 billion in tax according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Sounds like smokers are more than doing their bit.

(I'm in favour of the ban BTW)

Banning something has never worked ..... ever. It just drives the product / service underground and creates a black market and ergo more crime. I've never smoked but I believe in the right of people that choose to do so. Stupid idea banning it.

Some people still break speed limits, so should we just do away with any legal restriction on speed?

She supported legalization of cannabis once. When she was a Liberal. There is a youtube video of it.

Depends on the Lobby I guess.

Surprised the IEA hasn’t relocated to Tobacco Dock

the thing is smoking is in decline anyway and especially in young people. I do feel like it was heading towards naturally being phased out (the indoor smoking ban and raising the minimum age from 16 to 18 both big factors in this)

I would like to see a proper study into the long term of effects of what teenagers are doing instead and that is absolutely chaining their way through vapes- using them at a rate that you wouldn't even vaguely consider with normal cigarettes
