We've got an olive tree on our patio. Production last year was 50% up on the previous year...ie, 3 olives instead of 2.
We have an olive tree in our garden which produces a mass of tiny potential fruits but they never grow into actual olives. Do you prune your tree or do anything else to encourage them? Even 3 olives would be welcome.

Chocolate is likely to get a LOT more expensive soon.

Which upsets me.

I'm sure LArd, well, proper pork fat, will get expensive soon as well . . . . Affordable alternatives will always be available, rendered fat and mechanically recovered meat from spent tory MP's will be the new spam soon Enough.

I think you should have two to cross pollinate?

1 - buy some McCains Gastro Chips
2 - cook them
3 - drain off the beef dripping that they were coated in and is in the bottom of the tray
4 - stick in small tupperware pot in fridge

Haven't used anything else for cooking since.

They’re supposed to be self-fertile though other olive trees in the vicinity will apparently increase chances of fruit. I think I need to prune it out a bit to encourage growth. I’m not very optimistic — but first world problems and all that. I have enough on my plate without getting too stressed about a fresh olive deficiency.

You can buy farms in places like Andalusia for not much more than a bottle of EV oil. Won't get a huge crop of olives but enough for personal consumption. Suggest that.

We grow plenty here and it doesn't seem to be a problem, though avocado oil is the same price. Must be a glut of a avocados this year.
I like olive oil, especially the flavoured ones, but hate olives. ???

Flavoured olive oil is a travesty against food. It's the devil in oil form. The purpose of flavoured olive oil is to make the uneducated feel classy.

It's very noticeable here that since the cost of EV olive oil rocketed (a decent Arbequina, the nicest on bread, is now 10 - 14 euros a litre) the sales have dropped considerably. Coupled with the decrease in price of sunflower oil, now down to 6.50 euros for 5 litres a lot of the Spanish have changed their cooking habits and use this instead.

I am wondering if in the boredom of the break we are creating a Brighton parody fan site with threads on sourdough and EVOO.....but I will take the bait as a lover of both.....on EVOO a good read is Extra Virginity by Tom Mueller - an expose of EVOO fraud that will put you off buying even from reputable supermarkets. It's a bit dated now but a really good primer in the subject. With the price rising the stakes are even higher. My advice is to check out the annual EVOO awards (there are various versions) and buy direct from winning producers.....many are adept at shipping in a post Brexit world. Buy cases and give out bottles to your friends too. Expensive - yes but for the genuine high polyphenol EVOO this is the safest route.

Just been to Aldi.

One litre bottle of extra virgin olive oil that used to be £1.99 not so long ago, now... £5.99!!!

What are the best (and cheaper) alternatives?
It's gone mad. Average sized bottles in other shops routinely now about a tenner.

Australia could absolutely clean up on EVOO new-world wine style in the UK since the trade agreement - perhaps it is preferred to keep for domestic consumption?

What do you expect when in Australia, keeping yoghurt on the top shelf in the fridge counts as high culture? :lolol:

(Said with love for my friends and family down under )
