He was running flat out and his leg was clipped. Watch the reverse angle at full speed it will be obvious. I was a winger in my rugby days and it is horrendous when that happens to you! Try to carry on but can’t.
Which leg was the supposed contact on? From behind it's on his right foot. However, look closely as he runs on and he turns his left from the ankle into the ground. For me it's an inexplicable dive and one can only think he believes for that second that he's knocked it too wide.

Yeah, there were players coming in to block the shot so he made the decision to go down.

Not seen it myself, but so what? Maybe another team (not us) got on the wrong end of a VAR decision that sucks?

OK, so it (very slightly) reduces the chances of Citeh winning the league yet again (yawn) and (very slightly) improves our chances of finishing ahead of the beheadies and getting a European spot again. So, errrm, what is your beef, exactly? Nearly all of us would prefer to get rid of VAR, I think, but when it does us a good turn..........

I watched most of the first half but got distracted during halftime.

Did Smug spend his post match bemoaning the ref, VAR and general quality of officiating.
Or
Did Smug spend his post match saying his team were second best in every department, throughout the first half, and realistically should have been 5-0 down at halftime.

But he wasn’t clipped. The goalies arm touched his leg with less force of a bee landing on a flower. I’m completely neutral as I detest both teams. The first one was a penalty and the second was a dive.

I also detest both and hate diving. At that speed when clipped a tiny bit it can knock you completely off balance. Why would someone dive when he has successfully rounded the keeper and has an open goal to roll the ball into?

Newcastle can complain (rightly I would maybe say on whether a pen) all they like on this one, the outcome is the same in that Liverpool score (via penalty or tap in if not gone down).

Some reasons:

1) He was worried he might have taken it too far
2) He was worried that the defenders might get back to the line before he shot
3) He was hoping the gk would also be sent off

It is clearly a dive. You can tell by the way his legs suddenly buckle from under him. This is almost always a clear giveaway. If this had happened anywhere else on the pitch or wouldn't have been given imo.

Helps when you dive for 2 pens
Well they missed the first and they were 3-2 up when they scored the other one, so it didn't make any difference. It was a good result for Spurs though, so aren't you happy?

Just to be clear, it wasn't a VAR decision, the ref gave the penalty.

Yes that can happen, but it doesn't look like what did happen. It looks like he made no attempt to stay on his feet. There was contact, but it's a contact sport and not every bit of contact is a foul. The keeper tried not to touch him and it looked like he could've stayed on his feet if he wanted.

Because he couldn't simply roll the ball into an open goal as he'd knocked the ball a bit far.

Can’t help but thinking that decision was a massive opportunity for VAR / PGMOL to gain some credibility back by saying actually no, that’s not a penalty. That’s cheating. It would of been a show of strength and sent a message to the players/managers across the league. But they rolled over again.

Pretty much every penalty these days wouldn't be given as a foul anywhere else on the pitch. Refs, pundits, players now believe that only contact is necessary in the box for a penalty to be given.

It should be returned to only fouls, I.e. to the same level as warranting a free kick o/s of the box. The only difference should be a VAR review. Though they'll get that wrong too no doubt.
