Yep.

PIF now own 4 of the top clubs in the Saudi League -Al Ittihad, Al Ahli, Al Nassr and Al Hilal. So in theory they can decide who they want to win the League now, by shuffling their Galactico players around their clubs accordingly. Its like the UK government owning Man C, Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal, and deciding which players they want where.

Its football Jim, but not as we know it.

Does "sportwashing" even work ?

I mean, PIF can buy up all the major sporting events, athletes and players in the world. But everyone knows they are still a bunch of snide repressive violent medieval c*nts. What difference does throwing $2bn a year at Benzema do to change that ? It doesn't legitimise anything that they inflict on their people, their society.

As far as I can see, by attracting various sports events and its stars by offering utterly obscene amounts of money, all it does is cause further widespread revulsion at their backwards regime and, by the same token, the grasping scavenging hypocritical sportsmen and "ambassadors" who openly suck on their repugnant tit for the Saudi dollar. Yes, I'm looking at YOU, Beckham.

The Saudi's can sportswash all they like. It won't alter my opinion of their scum state one iota.

The sums are insane. Like you I can't imagine how this is cost-effective. And I still think the Saudis are mediaeval barbaric ****s :shrug:

I asked a similar question some time ago. A Dullard and others explained that simply by allowing these nations to be part of our stuff, it normalizes their existence, meaning that in the long term there is less chance we will start demanding they do things our way or we will stop doing business with them (or worse). They can then carry on being rich and treating women and sexual minorities any old how with equanimity. That's it, really.

Is it right that UEFA teams like Man City with huge global reach in the best,richest and most popular league in the world are constrained and/or sanctioned for spending too much (even though they can afford it), whereas as a Mickey mouse team in a Mickey mouse league that nobody watches or is interested in, with no global TV revenue can spend obscene amounts in the 100's millions in wages for retirees, way beyond the clubs capacity to earn it, and yet that's just fine?

Do they seriously think bringing in players at the end of their careers is going to make people interested in their league???Their population is 35m I was surprised to see.Why not develop their football/league the same way as other countries and develop young players and become a force in world football??

Sorry but I disagree with the comparison. The first 3 counties signed aging stars for reasonable, if inflated based on their current abilities, sums to try to build their local football league’s popularity. It was about football at least. The last two could never have self sustaining leagues, and are throwing obscene amounts of money to normalize repressive regimes. The players are turning their backs on Football to monetize their ´brand’.

I do not expect them to be Amnesty International ambassadors, but a shred of human decency would not go amiss.

It was very noticeable in Qatar though that a lot of fans abroad no longer care about teams. They support individuals. Hence the ‘amazing’ following for Argentina - a lot of those fans weren’t South American but people who simply had the shirts because they’re obsessed with Messi. I was surrounded by Argentina fans in one place - every single one of them kitted out, and all from Asia. Likewise, when England played France, most of the crowd went nuts at the mere mention of Mbappe (although they seemed most excited of all by the official announcement of the made-up attendance). So it will probably do nothing for the profile of Saudi’s clubs but the league could attract huge interest from Asia and Africa.
