Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

Good on Lineker for not being cowed. Good on Ian Wright for sticking by him. Annoyingly, though I'd find MotD less annoying without Lineker's bad jokes and golf club joshing, I won't be watching it all the time the BBC bans him from doing his job because of his political opinions on a matter that is completely unrelated to his job.

Gary Lineker presents football. He doesn't present politics. Football fans would be more troubled about his lack of impartiatlity over Leicester matches than they would be over his politics. Banning him for this is the equivalent of banning a news presenter for going on twitter to say that they hope Arsenal win the league.

The BBC's management has been transparently captured by the idiotic culture warriors that are in charge of this country.

Not a sensible decision: but I admit I don't know what is in his contract. If my employer tells me I can't do certain things (and most do) then I don't do those things. But no idea if that is the case here.

You have believed the propaganda. He did not compare the government to Nazi Germany. All the hype is coming from his critics.

He was happy to sign a contract making him the highest paid presenter at the BBC but unhappy with the terms and conditions. Tough really. It would be good if the BBC could get rid of Lineker, Shearer and Wright and just show more highlights. They aren’t a patch on Carragher, Carney and Neville anyway.

It doesn't seem to apply to other presenters like Alan Sugar or David Attenborough.

Where does it say his terms and conditions or are you jumping to conclusions again?
Btw Ian Wright has stood back in solidarity, and the number of high profile journalists, presenters with blue ticks back Lineker is brilliant, Dara O'Briain, Jeff Stelling, Dr Amir Khan, Ben Foster etc etc

This is what we'll get.

i thought he actually said that the language used in the discussion was akin to 30's germany, quite different from your understanding, but i could easily be wrong
