You know, I'm not so sure about that.

I think we can start affording to be a bit more picky about which players are for sale and which aren't
If Mitoma carries on like this he will be at one of the very best teams in the world within 18 months. We won't stand in the way of that, we know that.
He's that good. Unless this is some kind of freak purple patch. He is literally destroying everybody.

We can certainly price our best players beyond what most clubs in this country would be prepared to pay. Sure, we have to let them go for the really big opportunities - but there aren't many teams which fall into that category, and those ones have got the pick of the world's talent.

Right now, he is the best wide player in the league. He could easily end up with double figure goals and would almost be there already if he could head the ball. He is also Japanese which is a huge pull in terms of marketing. Carry on like this and the likes of Real will be seeing him as a very sensible signing.

Indeed. We can’t sell Mac, Caicedo, Trossard, Ferguson AND Mitoma! Maybe one every 18 months?

This may be the beer talking.........

but he is in so many ways the missing piece of the puzzle.
He could actually push us into contention for far better things than we have previously expected.

There's something about the De Zerbi project that's starting to feel very different from the Bloom/Potter £50m+ player factory.

Is very optimistic unfortunately... usually when a smaller club finds this amount of talent, the club gets pillaged every summer. Very difficult to deal with as it is currently with player/agent power.

Lost four starters/almost-starters in 2022 - Burn, Cucurella, Bissouma and Maupay. If it can be kept down to 2-3 important players leaving this year, its pretty good.

In fairness there are plenty of wide players that have had purple patches like he's having.
Zaha has been doing it every season for a long time and never really got the interest that we assume Mitoma will get.

I think Bloom might value him at far more than most clubs will want to pay until he's proven he can do it season after season.

I'm just going to throw this out there. I don't think it's a purple patch. I think he's the next Son. I also think, if he stays here, he's a 15-20 goal a season player.
He's so dangerous. So clinical (with his feet).

I think you're right (not a purple patch, the 20 goal thing may be a bit of a reach - tbc)
The way he manages to get to the byline when being tracked by defenders is utterly phenomenal.
He somehow manages to gain more space when other players get crowded out.

But until he's done it for a second season, it will remain a purple patch.
That's why I think TB will have his value way above the amount other clubs will want to pay.

Assuming he stays this good he's worth over £75m to us.
Who's going to pay that?

There are literally dozens of Japanese at the Amex every game now and that number seems to be growing with every game. They are all spending fortunes in the shop and are there for one player. He’s going to become a superstar.

However at what point do all these players suddenly look at each other and think - we could win things HERE if we stay together to a bit?

Very few players have that. It's very unusual for a player (through a combination of outstanding mental and physical attributes) to be able to create space and time in those kind of positions. It's what sets him apart.

Agree its not a purple patch. GP was absurdly excited about him in the summer and barely could stop talking about, I suppose they had watched him in USG where he usually showed all of what he does now (and even before back in Kawasaki Frontale) - absurdly good skills, pace and work rate... just slightly shit defensively, but he's been working on that and also won't need to be as good at it in his current role.

Don't think he is someone who will score 20 goals per season but I absolutely think he'll end up in one of the biggest clubs, but hopefully not for another 18 months though there is a risk it could happen sooner.

Burn, we could have kept if we wanted but his boyhood team came in for him, so we did the honourable thing.

Maupay is not good enough for us.

Fair enough on the other two. But bissys contract was up so not much we could do there.

It feels a bit weird to even think this, let alone type it - but he IS at one of the best teams in the world! Best 50, best 100, I don't know - but on our day ...

Unfortunately, unless we change our model, they can make much more money winning things elsewhere.........
