before this gets party political...

I live in East Preston, which is obviously not dominated by the Green Party, and we have very similar issues

That kind of weed is the least of Brighton's worries.

The town I grew up in and love has now become a third world shit hole.

Really? I'm not saying that you are being a bit dramatic, but isn't just certain areas that have got a bit scruffy and the council have banned herbicides so the pavement weeds have gone crackers. Other than that the majority of Brighton is rather nice and a good place to live...

I'm in a Tory area and we have the same. A nationwide desire not to use herbicides is on the rise. Luckily where I live, we all tend to take care of our patches. Probably due to not as many people renting and not as many buildings being split into flats etc. The "Balls to it, someone else can take care of it" game is strong in Brighton city centre.

The only thing that troubles me here is 'made The Times, made The Daily Mail'.

That means someone with no more authority than anyone else has had someone tell them and decided to write about it.

It's hardly a thing of shame. It's no different to anyone of us writing our blogs. It just has more reach.

We’ve Swedish friends. They say it’s just custom to take care of the pavement outside your home and if you have elderly neighbours, you do the same to their patch.

Yea or otherwise the city would take care of it. No chance of a pavement looking like that in Sweden.

That said, I love it, bit of natural chaos.

The council should do this/do that but it doesn’t. It has a different agenda. I’m afraid in the same way as taking our rubbish to the tip, if we have pride in where we live we should clear the weeds from outside where we live. Not possible for some people but how long does it take to pull up a few weeds at home and for your neighbours?

Very good point. I weed outside my house boundary and so do others on my street here in the still-upkempt garden of Ingerlund, where experimental meadows and bulb planting by the council on grassy open spaces is still the rage here.

I grew up on Foredown Drive in Portslade. I'd have loved to have planted a garden on the verge outside the house.

Mind you, as a kid on the streets of Portslade, I used to love the smell of whatever it was the council used to spray the weeds between the paving stones with???. Possibly explains a lot :eek:

SO many unique and really lovely residential areas to walk around in this city. Bin collection is an issue in some areas at the moment, but all cities this size have issues of some sort. I do a lot of walking and the weed issue really doesn't seem that bad to me - certainly not national newspaper worthy, anyway.

This.

They are just doing their bit for the Conservative and Unionist party.

Who could have guessed? ???

It is I think an anti-green party agenda. As the climate crisis worsens so will the opposition to doing something about it. If the Mail can appeal to it's readers "Look, neighbourhoods are being turned into cesspits because of green policies. If you don't want to end up living in a third world shithole like those poor wretches in Brighton, oppose all things green". Make people fear for their everyday, their immediate area and you can make them forget about global issues.

Not in so many words, but I think that's the agenda here.

Murdoch also has a lot to lose through green policies. It's why the Murdochs brought up National Geographic a few years back. It's not subtle but it's depressingly effective.

Drove up there after a game in 2019 ( just for memories) and there were white vans everywhere, including one parked on the grass outside of 'The Witherdens'....

Its not as we remember it, yes still the same houses but looks wrong....I remember a lamp post. I think it was outside yours ? where kids climbed and just hung off the cross bar at the top...
and the phone box halfway up where all kids pushed the B button to see if they got money back...

Its been 10 years since Mum moved down here and I think all the people we would have known have gone, either moved or passed on. Even Jonniesta's family (84) have passed on and the house sold.

It all changes, as it must. Yes the white vans.... I noticed also the loft extensions that have disfigured the aspects, but to be fair the houses are for the owners to live in, not for me to walk past and admire as icon semis of the 50s and 60s.

Eric would have rushed out and asked 'would you mind awfully moving your vehicle', had he seen it :lolol: I remember he had a foreign car (white Peugot; the old man warned me against buying a foreign car as 'you can't get the parts :lolol:) with a 'Don't follow me, follow The Albion' sticker in his rear window.

This may interest you. There is a lot of contribution from Janice Langridge who married Ray Hamblett (both in my class at St Nick's infants, in the 60s:eek:):

Not a hint of white dogshit anywhere ???

Hope all's well with you. Regards to you mum - mine's long gone as you may well know (your mum came to the funral) and I had assumed we are all orphans now
