But a false 9 isn't a second striker as the role implies there isn't a main striker.

Does it mean ‘floating’ essentially / in the hole - am I grasping this ‘false 9’ phrase right? Is a sweeper gonna be called a false 5 soon?

My thought is I absolutely hate that cringey fifa generation ‘phrase’ that’s crept into football. False 9 FFS

I can remember before midfielders were about. Half backs they were called. Or are they wingbacks now.

HWT I’m pretty sure my Grandad used to refer to midfielder s as half backs ? Defenders being Full backs on either side of the CH / CB in the WM formation

You are of course correct. They were called 'left half' and 'right half'

Wasn't Allan Clarke of Leeds a sniffer? He wasn't a bench player.

Blame it on Hidegkuti. He started it (in the 1950s)!

His role was called a deep-lying Centre Forward.

The two games when Hungary thrashed England(6-3 at Wembley, 7-1 in Budapest) were an absolute eye opener.
Poor Billy Wright, England's Centre Half(No. 5), didn't know what to do. Man marking, which a No.5 was supposed to do to the No. 9, would have left a big gap, so he maintained his position and in so doing let Hidegkuti run the show.

Don Revie was so impressed that he played that role in the Manchester City team of the mid 50s in what became known as the Revie Plan. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them play that formation in their 4-2 win at Fratton Park, the week before they won the FA Cup Final in 1956.

Are you of that vintage genuinely ? If so was Duncan Edwards as good as I have been told ?

Moving away from the terminology (I agree, it's fine, as long as people generally understand what it means), I don't think it's the worst idea in the world tactically and we've done it, or variants on it, last season. Mostly Trossard where Maupay and Welbeck played more as wingers.

The way I see it, we've got lots of very talented attacking midfielders and, shall we say, unproven strikers. GP might take the view in some games, that Gross, MacAllister, Lallana and Trossard could take it in turns to be the one that attacks the box but overall play without a recognised striker

Did a subs bench exist back then ? Possibly just a deck chair ?

He was THE sniffer. The one and the only. I selected a sniffer for the bench only for reasons of low comedy.

And what of the fans?

Sid and Doris Bonkers.

We used to play school football games on Saturday afternoons in the 50s so I only got to see a handful of men's football matches. By the time I went to Manchester University in 1959 Duncan Edwards was no longer with us.

Great. The Ox can join Lallana, MacAllister, Caicedo, Gross and Trossard all buzzing round the edge of the area like a swarm of bees while the six yard box remains a desolate wasteland

Testicoloss Grande is who we need, Even Semi Medioso from Bologna or Minimus P Nye from FC Shy boys would have more front than our lot.

Indeed...left half, right half ... although we did switch to a sweeper formation in our school team in about 1973.

Do we have a better term though? How would you describe the role Fabregas plated for Spain at Euro 2012, for example? He certainly wasn't a striker/No.9 in the traditional sense.

i must have missed those games , were they mixed gender matches..?
