I’d have just said “well, today isn’t about you so goodbye”.
Time and a place.
Having said that, the world is changing in this respect and mostly for the better.
However, I think the OP is lying and shit stirring. So I regret posting now.
What a confused mess I have become.

you can identify as whatever you want , it is no concern of anybody else and equally no body else should have their day affected you or your attitude to what you identify as.

n.b you is not you , it is a general term to denote the subject of the 21st century identity pheonomenum.

I’ve always thought the term ladies and gentleman rather old fashioned, and for a person to use it professionally and not be aware of this and how the world has changed seems at best ignorant and worse case provocative. Seems a lot of people have to hang on to the past and keep entrenched views.
Substituting ‘everyone’ for ladies and gentleman is not a big deal. Sticking up for the use of this when understanding how it can offend betrays the mindset of that person.

perhaps people need to state in their wills how they wish the crowd to be addressed at their funeral ....?? y'know so as not to cause offence to anyone like. The celebrant would start the service not by welcoming the crowd but reading the wishes of the departed as to the welcoming part of the ceremony , the proposed welcome would be hypothetically aired giving anyone who may be offended by the proposed welcome the opportunity to leave the room , thus alleviating the situation to arise where somebody or persons may find themselves offended or , in acute cases, outraged.

FFS....!!!

But it's clearly offended the OP in his "professional" life (as a funeral director) who decided to post it on a public internet forum to make a political / previous local media "celebrity" shock jock point.

Was there any ****ing need to do that ? "Challenged" isn't the word.

That's the issue. I couldn't give a flying **** what the person identifies themselves as.

What's frankly weird is the "A funny thing happened to me at Crematorium last week, those transgenders eh? eh?, if my Aunt was my brother she'd be my sister, who remembers Love Thy Neighbour, You can't say that these days, my mother in law is so that and Bernard Manning was misunderstood, I'd ban them from the Amex if they didn't like Prince Phillip blah, blah, ****ing blah".

Get a job on TalkRadio with an Albion shirt on and see how far you get.

Well there would have only been ladies and gentlemen present.

There's has been reports of UFOs lately but I don't think they are attending funerals yet.

Banging on about being offended by the celebrant not using non binary terms is not helpful

Neither is banging on about this stuff being 'woke' 'bullshit' etc etc etc.

To me these are the extremes of a pretty simple discussion.

Are you prepared to make a few changes to your language and behaviour to make some people feel less marginalised?

Some people are not going to be okay with this. I would suggest that most are. Many that are, are going to need some time to make the necessary adjustment. It may be clumsy for a while and we will certainly make mistakes but bear with us we will get there.

The fact that the individual approached the celebrant after the service sounds fairly reasonable to me. Assuming they did it respectfully and with kindness, I don't see the issue.

The other extreme banging on about this being 'woke' etc have their own motivations for this but I can't help feel that these kinds of labels give them an all encompassing buzz word that means that they don't really have to think about individual issues.

I guess the extreme opinions on either side will continue sniping at each other while the rest of us in the middle just get on with things and try to make the world better for each other.

Point of order here.

Don't take those three as being representative of Australia in general. We have as wide range of opinions as anywhere else.

I know this doesn't need to be said but I would like it known that I distance myself from the opinions of those I share a landmass with. (not all of them obs, plenty of thoughtful and progressive types over here).

You’re alright, a whole side of my family live in Lower Plenty, they’re good folks too. Just a bit of ribbing :)

Exactly. Free speech.
No problem for anyone with a window licker off spring or people with an understanding of trans to choose another funeral director.

Wow!!

Is this thread fitted with its own time machine.

On a thread about considering others by the language you use, you have excelled yourself.

You're not Australian. So you don't represent us so you don't have to worry

The amount of snowflakes on this thread is laughable. Imagine getting offended because someone doesn't include themselves as a lady or a gentleman.

Alternatively, someone getting upset about having to use a different form of address might be seen as the 'snowflake'

I guess this depends on how far you want to stretch your definition.

My chosen definition stretch makes me more Australian than you. :lolol::lolol:

What is your stretch that makes me not Australian?
