yes but I'd be pissed off at Brighton for not offering him a contract.

Admirable self sacrifice from those voting ‘no.’ To not be tempted by all that PL moolah means you must already be fabulously wealthy !

Just to clarify this is a 10 year old. The chances of money are incredibly slim!

Wasn’t he released by them rather than left?

Quite likely. I just wanted to check his age when he was there. I knew he was quite young.

It goes to show how some youth managers get it wrong, with White being released by Southampton as well, yet both made it as PL players.

My daughter was brought up on the story of Ian Chapman not signing for Palace because he was a Brighton boy from Whitehawk and would have to look at himself in the mirror every day. The money didn't come into it for Ian - it was about not betraying your roots and community and feeling like a low-life as you pull on that hated shirt. I know my daughter would be the same. OK she's now a 26 year old teacher now, but had she shown an extraordinary football ability at a young age, what would I, as a parent, have done had Palace made an offer? Perhaps I'm lucky that never happened, and no parental guidance was needed! Therefore she and I can carry on hating Palace with clear consciences!

It's a multi billion pound game now and you can't carry passengers. Do you have any examples?

Ashley Neal doesn't count as that was over 20 years ago.

You say that but surely they get a leg up as they do in the multi billion pound F1.
Just a few examples here.

To be in the worlds best at F1 is different as the market is so much smaller due to the financing of motorsport. However footballers have a few quid, the scouts surely notice the name and genetics of the footballer, when the successful pro dad engages with the scouts, benefits could be forthcoming......couldn't they?

I don't believe they will be boosted into the squad unless they have all the right attributes. But I can only imagine a few are bubbling about below that level.

So no actual examples in football. Just in a completely different sport. I don't remember there being a Hamilton Senior ???

I do know of a few former/current pro footballers whose kids are at academies and their dad certainly got their foot in the door for them. Not going to name them as not the kids fault but it definitely happens. However like GB says given the big money involved the not so good kids do get let go eventually.

(Edit: if you’re curious how I know one of my kids plays at a high level but no not Palace academy!)

There were no examples because I was asking the question, do you have any?

Isn’t Rio Ferdinand’s son in our academy, or was?

Truth is it’s nigh on impossible to get into Brighton academy. My lad is a decent centre back. Brighton have an U13 squad of just 16 players and one of the centre back’s is Tate Ferdinand, Rio’s son. Rio lives in Bromley. What chance has a decent local centre half got!

I know another kid who was offered a contract at 16 but decided to leave as he and his family felt it would be very hard to get game time in the U18’s given the players we sign at that age.

My son has a mate who recently got rejected by the academy after what seemed to be a very successful trial. He was approached by Palace and has looked into it. I have to say (through gritted teeth) that I would encourage my lad to do the same.
