This season especially you'd have expected more so perhaps its frustrating but for Brighton given our history, our wage bill then 5 consecutive years in the Premier League - even bumping around 15th -17th - is a massive success.

Then we’ll have to disagree around the forwards. If we’d signed a decent one during the last two years, given the chances we create, we’d be a lot better off.

The most curious thing..
Does anyone know how many of Maupay's goal attempts this season missed the goal, compared to those that were on target but saved, and those that actually scored?

We signed Maupay and Welbeck who have been decent and certainly not failures. Even Connolly is underrated on here and he cost nothing (and might develop into a 20 goal a year Champ striker on loan - he's still v. young) If we'd signed a striker who'd scored 15+ goals then that would be terrific but our budget was clearly £16m or so in 2019/20 and no fee at all last summer and few clubs do.

Welbeck was free. When he’s on the pitch he has class, never scored a great amount throughout his career.

I don’t rate Maupay and as a forward do not think he’s decent. Better than Locadia granted. In fact he is a lot better outside the box than in it.

I don’t agree as I said.

Edit - re Connolly, I hope he makes it, but sadly not sure he will

Ha ! fair enough i think its a bit harsh - its more complex/nuanced than than imo - to call our strikers failures and not decent but there you go !

According to Whoscored, he's had 71 shots this season - 26 on target, 22 blocked and 23 off target.

By comparison, DCL has also had 71 shots - 38 on target, 9 blocked, 24 off. Jamie Vardy has had 77 shots - 36 on target, 13 blocked and 28 off target.

So - he's not missing more than others, but lots more are being blocked. Why?

Actually, looking further, Maupay's stats for the season are very close, in minutes played and shot accuracy, to Firmino and Werner, both much more expensive players. The problem is that we don't have other players scoring to make up for it...

I like Maupay, he works his socks off, he is being made a scapegoat because he will not be a 20 goal a season forward in the EPL. Look how much he cost and then look how much the 20 goal a season strikers are worth, not even taking into account the wages they are on.

Because he so often gets the ball with his back to goal, so by the time he's turned, there are more defenders in the way.

I dare say only 2, maybe 3 players will hit 20+ league goals this season. The '20 goal a season' player is surely a bygone phrase of a 42 game season, not a 38 game one.

I would have thought 10 goals is the benchmark requirement for a player in a team such as ours. Anything above that a bonus, anything below and the questions should be asked.

Bamford supposedly cost £7m and is supposedly on £35k pw, has 15 goals.

He was a journeyman until Bielsa arrived.

Oh, agreed. I've no idea why so many endlessly use the phrase, but I suspect that it was pretty rare in 42 game seasons, even more so for a team consigned to the league's bottom half.

I’m sure growing up it was more frequent.
Didn’t Michael Robinson score near that or surpass it for us?

Andy Ritchie got about 14, which is what I would expect given the chances we create.
