Really?

empty spots on shelves is a common sight here, Noones hungry, but the choices are down and prices are up . . . at work we have huge issues with supplies of materials. and big delays in deliveries. I've also had issues personally with purchases, all from EU countries, be it scooter parts, cclothes, a welder . . .

Covid has covered up a lot . . . . as we all get stebbed and released back into the wild, maybe you'll notice.

I agree with yur last statement . . .many people are daft enough to think like that.

have you really seen empty supermarket shelves? not seen it myself, other than intermittently, for non-imported goods. the problems with trade for medium and smaller businesses are significant and private purchases from europe is a mess now. we have to understand that these are not issues that impact or effect the vast majority of people, so their net impact is negligible. telling someone in Hartlepool because you cant source scooter parts that Brexit is a disaster is only going to get eyes rolling.

The thing that surprises me about this is that with the Corbyn election, all the Labour voters I know were very much of the opinion that, "we should have won, we didn't and it's the public's fault because they were tricked".

This exact sentiment runs through the entire Labour hierarchy. "It's not us, it's them". Something has to change, they need to actually listen to the voter, not patronise them .

They keep losing and getting battered because they don't listen. They are the opposition for pity's sake and they aren't trying to appeal to the electorate based on what *they* want.

Just heard the same old soundbites, almost identical word for word and from the same people; "we are very disappointed at the result and will listen and learn from what went wrong". What have they listened to and learnt when they said the same thing after Corbyn's hammering.

I can see this happening with a lot of qualified professional younger people

I imagine it already is as the UK continues to sink deeper into the mire and Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US all start looking a lot more favourable.

Oh no! All the clever people who vote Labour are going to leave, that means the Tories will rule forever...

Is the UK suffering from Stockholm syndrome syndrome?

Utterly bizarre.

Giving millions to their mates in dodgy deals and nobody really cares. Depressing.

At the end of the day these elections don't really matter. I seem to recall that the tories never won a bielection during Thatcher's era.

That’s the point though - it’s pretty unique that governments win by-elections.

I’m sure I heard this morning on a TV interview that since the war … only 4 by-elections have been won by the party in government. Hartlepool would make 5. That makes this one significant.

I find myself in a strange middle ground of completely agreeing with you that Labour simply aren't doing anything that even resembles an attempt to win back their lost voters. But equally I'm baffled at how anyone can see all this shit in the press about cronyism and Boris' interior decorating and not think "Hmm, that's a touch shady."

I've felt politically orphaned for years now. I'm absolutely not a Tory but Labour aren't the answer either.

The Tories are as corrupt as ****. Everything you say is true. And under Labour previously? It was exactly the same

I'd quite like a party that does both, a party that's concerned with the welfare of everyone. No matter their skin tone or gender.

It shouldn't be, and do forgive me if I've misread your post, a choice between a party that prioritises one set of society and a party that prioritises another.
It shouldn't be,but unfortunately that's what it seems to be.

Since that report you link to was published in 2014 child poverty stats for Hartlepool from 2014-2019 show a 9.8% increase in the number of children living in poverty. That's pretty compelling evidence of truth at lack of improvement.

https://nechildpoverty.org.uk/facts/

https://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/ne...arter-children-living-below-breadline-2862875

But Labour didn’t fight this by election on child poverty so voters have no reason to believe they would change anything. Instead they obsessed on Boris’ curtains and put up an extreme remain candidate. Crap strategy and the outcome was widely predicted.

If the public are so easily tricked, and I couldn't trick them,I'd want to keep quiet about it.....

It's 4 (now 5) by-elections gained by the government. There have been plenty more where they have held seats that were already theirs.

Paragraph 7.2 on here, for details.

Thanks for clarification and link.

It was a quick comment made during an interview this morning that I picked up on.

"These records show the rare occasions when the Government won a seat they had not won at the previous General election" ... so still pretty significant.

As far as i am concerned it seems to me that so many people have no idea about current affairs, I speak to people about what is going on in the news regarding Covid and the rules, backhanders, PPE and many other things regarding Johnson and the tories and they sat I did not know that.
People must be getting all their info from Facebook and Twitter or a rag like the Daily Mail.
Thickos in Hartlepool have still voted on Brexit, that is how stupid they are, but they have voted for a public schoolboy who is responsible for killing thousands with his dithering, the vaccine roll out has sod all to do with Johnson, it is down to the NHS alone, a real kick up they arse for one that areas biggest employer.
They have basically forgiven Johnson for all the deadly mistakes, including killing nurses, and corrupt activities that he has, is and will continue to do.
Gave up on the majority of the public some time ago, we are awash with ignorant morons.

you're probably right. they'll need appeal to the middle, aspirational and affluent classes, while not abandoning their traditional support. Blair achieved this so its not impossible. trouble is Labour dont seem to want to, as you've prefectly higlighted in this and other posts, there seems a view that the traditional support will just put up with what ever the Labour party tells them. even when the voters keep telling them they arent happy about that.

really its time for the Liberals to make play for the same center ground, but they dont seem to mass enough interest to push Labour aside.
Trouble is that the Liberals (whether with a small or a large 'L') treat the working class/pro-Brexit/people they call gammon with the same contempt that Labour do. Coupled with their open ambition to enter into talks to rejoin the EU the minute they get into power makes them complete no hopers in the race for that hallowed central ground.

Must be a burden, being so enlightened and in the minority as such.

I couldn't agree more . . . . They're everywhere, here at work, more than half I'd say. seemingly intelligent within their field, but Christ, don't let them at any important controls. and the bollocks they come out with is just mind boggling.

It really should not, given the vast majority would vote remain now, especially if honest fact was part of the debate.
