Anna Maxwell Martin is far too big a name for her character (Carmichael) not to be highly significant. That's always the giveaway in things like Midsomer Murders. An apparently insignificant character played by a well-known name is always the guilty party.

In which case...

Poor episode tonight. Last week was the cliffhanger to the finale...but unfortunately they needed a 30 minute interview scene in the middle.

Slightly disappointed

Interesting Steve didn’t give more information about Jo’s father when he was discussing it with Kate. Great red herring about James Nesbitt’s involvement. All pointing to Osborne I suspect what they find underneath the floor is going to be the key. Feels like they are ending this after this series, if they are going for a seventh there’s going to have to be a lot of new twists as it’s all looks like it’s being wrapped up.

Thought that episode was weird. Why did Kate flee the scene, and why did anyone care if she shot Pilkington, didn't make sense

I assume that, given she'd just found out that Carmichael had taken over AC-12 and pulled the surveillance on Davidson and Pilkington just before they tried to kill her, she was worried that when the police arrived she'd be scapegoated to stop the investigation.

When I say I assume that, I read the suggestion on the Guardian website after the episode. It wasn't made particularly clear.

You reckon?

If it's the last ever episode then in an hour next week there's still, off the top of my head:

- who or what is H?
- What do the prison Guards do to Davidson?
- Who was Davidson taking orders from?
- Steve's back / Medical, does he go or get sacked?
- Hastings retirement, does it happen?
- Hastings giving the 50k to Corbett's wife - why?
- why did they flee the scene when Kate shot Ryan / does Carmichael challenge who shot Ryan?
- Who died in Spain / did James Nesbitt really get paid simply to pose for a photo?
- What's buried under the workshop?
- probably a scene confirming Terry Boyle is no longer being manipulated

And almost certainly a load of other stuff. Can't help but feel they would nerd at least a 90 minute special to get through all that. Wasted a lot of time last night.

It does feel a bit like that.

There's only one more H to find. AC12 effectively closing down, Hastings retiring, Arnott 5 days before Occy Health. Carmichael clearly heading for a fall.

Pilkington was the clear OCG link - there has to be someone else of the main characters involved with Davidson locked up. Always the chance they get away with it for another series but if the Fourth Man is exposed in this one, I'm struggling to see where we go next....
