West is BEST
Having lived in various parts of the UK. Some nice, some not so, after living in Brighton/Sussex for 23 years it makes many, not all but many places seem very bland indeed. I have moved about twenty mins out of Brighton. As a forty something I prefer to pop in. But I cant think of many better places on a summers day if you're after people, cleavage and a bit of a buzz. And the smell of tramp's piss, obvs.

I believe Stoke on Trent is the same

Stoke's made up of 6 towns.

To answer the original question, I'd guess in Britain it would be the gay population/pride etc.

Around the world, probably the football team. Being in the PL for a few years will do that.

There's probably a fair number of people in America who know of Brighton through Quadrophenia.

It's about time you cleaned yourself up.

I've lived in a good number of places across England since leaving Sussex 10 years ago, and nowhere will beat Croydon on that score.

The human turd I found in a back alley in Manchester city centre on my way to do the marathon a few years ago is a standout memory to be fair.

Couldn’t you wash before you travel in from Shoreham?

I'm sure I've seen a flicker of fear in the eyes of a few Frenchman when I've said I'm from Brighton.
I assumed it was from when the French sneaked over in the 15th century and burnt our town but when they came back for a second go the people of brighton were ready for them and gave them a good kicking.
In parts of France I'm sure Brighton must be famous for that.

Being tolerantly different than any other place in the UK in many ways, not just the gay scene, making it unique, if you are not tolerant and don't 'get' Brighton then avoid it because you wont like it.

This. Having been born and bred here, and trying to explain it to the countless 'incomers' who visit, like and settle here, I have often said that Brighton tolerates just about anyone and anything.
You can be who you want to be, and it's really quite difficult to get a local to raise an eyebrow, however you dress or behave. Men dressed as pretty pink fairies, women as rugged skinheads, punk rockers rubbing along with teddy boys, etc, etc, etc, - all just seem (nowadays) to get along.

Just don't hurt anyone else while you do what you do.

(However, I try to make sure that they don't visit NSC - the levels of intolerance to other people's opinions on here can be quite shocking. What would it be like if we could actually see each other, meet up, and get a real glimpse into the multitude of lifestyles that must be lived by it's members?:smile: )
