[Albion] Danny Welbeck, should we? [18/10: we did - one year deal] - *** NEW ONE YEAR DEAL ***

Massively over excited by Welbeck and I’m not pulling that back in check by coming up with reasons to think otherwise.

Many didn’t even expect him to be starting games so soon after no pre-season, but he’s hit the ground well and truly running. He’s missed a few chances because he’s getting chances.

I think his impact is larger than just on the pitch as well. His personality appears to have fitted straight in, a lift around the place. He seems to have ‘got’ Brighton straight away and there is a smile on his face as he plays.

No caveats from me, think he is the real deal. Keep him fit and who knows how many he could get. Great start to his Albion career.

Unfortunately, the caveat IS his fitness.

Showed that he is exactly what we have been missing.

Decision for the recruitment team now to stick or twist ....... personally I’d like to see us go out in Jan to sign a similar player to compete with Welbeck.

We can’t allow ourselves to put back in a position where we have no cover

Can't believe people are still questioning this signing. Amazing signing. Played well Vs Burnley, was immense yesterday. If he didn't have injury problems he would easily be at a top 6 side. If he could finish he would be in the top 10 strikers in the world.

We’ve got to chase Edouard.

The headlines of Nunez to Man City show you where out scouts minds are at.

For the first time in what seems like a gazillion years watching the Albion, we have a team with some pace.

I can't think of another striker who has played for us who could've scored his goal yesterday - not Ward, not Zamora, not Murray. With him and Lamptey we are giving defenders a different set of problems which is great to see.

Long may it continue.

Do you have all the other attributes then ?? tall , really fast, athletic , built like a brick shitt house, baller , good dribbler, excellent in the air, intelligent, know how to get in the right areas. Great at linking up with other players, decent passer.

If yes, maybe you're right.

I was happy with the signing as we know how good he can be it was just a risk on his injury history. As it's not my money and we hadn't signed any other striker (apart from the youngster) it seemed like a no brainer. We don't have another game for a week which should help him. When we get to the stage of 3 games in 8 days, we probably need to take it easy with him. He is so good that we shouldn't risk getting him injured through over playing.

Very happy with having DW on board for the season. I dont think he's the greatest striker in the league, there were certainly better options looked at by the scouts, and he's definitely past his best, but it was about having options. Without that signing we'd have been looking at a season of having Maupay, Zeqiri, and Connolly as the striker options. Zeqiri will be eased into things so wont feature much til 2021, and injuries/covid/fatigue mean this is a season where from game to game you're very likely not to have a full squad. That means we'd have entered into a scenario where for a decent portion of games we could have had just 1 or 2 strikers available, and unless that 1 striker is Aguero/Werner/Salah etc you're unlikely to score many goals. Teams will just find it too easy knowing they only have to worry about Maupay and after 70 minutes he'll probably be tired with no options on the bench. We needed options, so that opposition defenders have more to think about and hopefully each week one of those options steps up with a goal or 2.

Im excited for the second half of the season where Potter can potentially pick from Maupay, Andone, Zeqiri, Connolly, Andone (after injury recovery), and Tau (if we recall him).

I wonder how long we were after him, how long we had been talking with him and how long he had been waiting for our offer.

The signing felt very much like a last minute afterthought, we haven't got anyone else so might as well give him a go, him with no other offers so better take ours. But then you see that performance, it can't be that he wasn't in some demand.

So is it possible, nay probable, that we had been talking to him for months, and it just took this long to get over the line? I would love to know these things even though I'm resigned to never doing so.

Great performance Danny knew you were a class act. Now we need to ease Swiss Andy into the prem. I have a feeling he may surprise a lot of people. Two strikers both fast both clinical and both good in the air. Makes my mouth water.

He is definitely what we have been missing.

Difficult to know whether his missed opportunities are rustiness or just that he's not the full deal.
Either way he still the option we have been missing since Muzza was overplayed in 18/19.

As an aside, I read somewhere that Manchester City are seriously looking at Darwin Nunez as the replacement for Aguerro.

I have no idea if it’s true or not, I may even have read it on here.

I think Lallana hinted that Welbeck had been weighing up various moves in the window and talks were ongoing for a while.

You can certainly imagine other clubs in the bottom half, especially newly promoted teams, were interested.
