Easy, just invite thousands of Students here for a couple of years, give them the vote in a central constituency and then let them wave goodbye to what their vote has left. Many Tories have fled the town.

I’m a proud Brightonian but not proud of how it looks.

Not sure many students bother to vote in our local election but, if they have and have forced Tories to flee, then bloody good luck to them.

When are you joining the exodus?

Should students not have a vote?

Anything that gets the Tory's in a flap while also upsetting the Gammony Thicket's on here, gets my vote. Marvelous scenes.

Let's get going!

I'm not sure that makes any sense at all.

Students are not "invited here", they elect to study here at one of the two universities and they spend a great deal of money in the City and use its services. It's obvious they should be able to vote while they live here. Some choose to stay too. If they choose to leave then their vote goes with them.

I assume the subtle reference to Withdean sailed over your head there. Are you really saying people are leaving the leafy Semis of Withdean and letting students rent their houses???

And as for this outcry about politically cleansing Tories, they're only about 5 miles in any direction from a wall of blue should they find the rug munching, wigwam living vegans utterly unbearable.

Yes in the constituency they have come from. A postal vote

As I understand it, students can choose to vote in their 'home' constituency or where they are studying - either way, surely their votes are as valid as anyone else's and I, for one am delighted that the city of Brighton and Hove has no Tory MPs and little prospect of a Tory council.

.

Yes, it was so subtle (given the thread title) that it did go over my head particularly as I thought we were not supposed to have digs at individual NSC posters (if that was the intent).
Happy for you to explain/expand your subtle comment to everyone else it might have been too clever for.

Indeed. And contrary to timbha's suggestion, it's not something unique to Brighton, all students can vote in their home constituencies or their university's (I voted in Brighton and Bradford - but not in the same election!).

It's also worth pointing out that there are about 38,000 students studying in Brighton and there about 220,000 registered voters. So, even if every student at uni lived in Brighton; even if every student voted (and this is the age group least likely to vote); even if every student voted in B&H and even if every student voted Green - that's still only about 16% of the voters.

So, it's pretty fanciful to suggest that any Green success has been powered by the student vote.

You don't think they should have the right to vote in the constituency that they live, study and probably work in?

Of course he doesn’t. However, as was pointed out by an intelligent poster earlier, the student vote, even if every single student voted, wouldn’t determine the outcome of a local election. But students are an obvious target because they represent hope, positivity, application and acceptance. Principles a few posters on here have long since abandoned.

its worth pointing out the electorate for Brighton Pavilion is 77k. with high concentration of students and ex-students in that area, its fair to say they influence that seat.

I think the rule is you can’t start a thread about someone but you can point out when someone is being an ignoramus within a thread.

For example, I couldn’t start a thread titled; timbha is ignorant. But I could say within a thread; timbha is ignorant. See?

But I apologise, just a bit of joshing.

Well done Greens, Lucas does Brighton proud. This is a very good thing .

I'd have said that Kemp Town had a bigger collection of students as it contains Brighton Uni's Falmer campus big student areas like Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and Combe Rd.

Brighton Pavilion doesn't even have all of Sussex's halls as some are in Lewes.

But as I pointed out above - even if most students live there and they all voted for Lucas, that wouldn't be enough to swing it
