Sounds like the Hassocks stretches.......have fished all of them a fair bit....
Hamsey is harder work as very tidal, but some good fish there. Lots of bream/skimmers, roach, perch etc. Feeder or float both work, usually better on a neap tide, fish a couple of hours either side of high water for best results.
Wineham and Twineham is a tale of two seasons really. Low and slow in summer, so careful stalking with a light bomb rod or stick float works really well (start with bread flake, the chub love it) and roam the banks. After the vegetation gets cut in the Autumn it’s actually easier as the swims become more fishable as they are longer with far fewer snags and the water carries more colour. Loads of chub, bream, roach and dace to be had.......also plenty of pike in the winter particularly if you are into that kind of thing.
Good watching that......our match squad had a lesson with Jan Porter (RIP) in Nottingham on long distance feeder fishing on the Trent...very informative to watch an expert do it - 100 yard casts to the far bank catching big chub.

Nice !, seem to remember Jan Porter giving up match fishing and moving on to speci fishing , i didn't know he had passed away

He did......I know his brother Roger as well (through running), he got cancer a while back and didn’t make it sadly. He knew the Trent like the back of his hand. He spent a day with us when we were practicing for the Nationals, demonstrating feeder fishing on one of the wider stretches. Lovely bloke.

A colleague has been catching mackerel by the bucket load in Selsey

I'd guess whiting.
Whitebait been jumping in Hove for 3 days. No joy with the mackerel feathers though despite 5am starts. Maybe it's bass chasing in the whitebait.

Horse Mackerel, very boney , not that good for eating
In matches they were a bonus after dark , you would lower a tilley lamp just above the water, newhaven large arm was very good , the light attracted them in thier hundreds on a calm night in summer

horse mackerel is right , not whiting , that is great eating ......use the horse mackerel for live bait for bigger things such as big ling or bass.....deep water bottom fishing....
don't blame me if you catch a conger and end up covered in slime wearing your trace.

It turns out he could have been catching mackerel WITH a bucket.
There was a mass of them going looney about 10ft off from the waters edge.
He could have walked along the groyne and just catch the ones jumping out of the water!!!!

Scad, aka Horse Mackerel. If they are big enough they are tasty eating but need careful filleting and skinning as they are very bony, great fun fishing for them on light gear though.

Was out early doors with a pal in a little boat Sunday, lots of " boils" and huge shoals of Whitebait about, there are mackerel about, keep trying. They were going crazy up against the East arm Shoreham and the Pipe by Carats Cafe.
Not managed to get to the beach yet but since 16th been roving the Ouse in Mid Sussex regularly. Great fun. Nothing remarkable but several decent chub, loads of dace and roach and had a 15 minute tussle with a mirror carp I wasn't expecting on Monday evening (trotting maggot on light gear), I lost...........obviously. Also lucky to have a decent estate lake 10 misn walk from the house....been wandering down there too picking carp off on floating crust in true old-skool style. Nothing big but really enjoying my comeback so far.

Mackerel fishing a few hundred yards off shore , simply lobbed one of the catch back in the water on a size 5/0 and had 9 tope all returned alive and kicking in 2 hours , including this beast for my pal .

One of the Hassocks guys had an 18lb grass carp from the Hamsey stretch this week. Never knew they were in there although after the floods of 2000, i suppose anything could. Looking forward to getting into a nice shoal of Guppies soon
Anyone fished the Rother? I'm off camping in August near Bodium and the Rother runs behind the campsite and is apparently free to fish.

Jev s a lot of the Rother down that way is RFA ( Rother fisheries Association) controlled I believe
Might be worth checking before you go
It s always possible that the campsite has control of their bank I suppose ?
