Usually they would wear a headscarf to hide messy or unwashed hair which is a bit less alluring. Power showers and decent shampoo mean they no longer need to hide it.

No, sorry, don’t forget this is Withdean pre-drainage improvements of 2001. It looks, from the photo, that it’s been raining so the sport has to be water polo. The home team, Withdean Wetbacks, were playing Saltdean Snorkellers for the William Webfeet Wellies Shield.

A quick google search tells me Sussex were champions in the mid 60’s.
