[Albion] Fortess Goldstone - 1975-79

Was that the period when we had two massive wins, a 9 nill and a 10 - 1 or something like that? one aginst Southend maybe?

Or am I dreaming?

Just checked and that was 10 years earlier!!!

10–1 v Wisbech Town, FA Cup R1, 13 November 1965 (FA Cup)[1]

9–1 v Southend Utd, FL D3, 27 November 1965 (Football League) [1]

That was a hell of a month!!

God I feel old!

My earliest Albion memory is hearing the 6-0 scoreline against Colchester United on the radio. Does anyone remember the half time score ?

I remember the 4-2 v Hereford very well. Fred Binney with his head bandaged.
So many memories of those years. 3_2 home victory Against Massive to secure promotion In front of 36k. Peter Ward missing a penalty in the first half and then us turning that game around. Remember the Ken Tiler goal well in that game, and the c@nt in the east terrace who was having a go at Peter Ward for missing the penalty. He’d never gone to a previous home game all season and then was spouting off at how shit Ward was. I’m glad to say I put him right.
Home game v Mansfield where we won 3-1 and Ward was unstoppable for much of the 2nd half. Went round players twice just for the fun of it.
Just such a shame there aren’t more highlights of those games.

This is the lucky era when I fell in love with The Albion. The greatest of times with buzzing crowds rammed into every corner of our home. The greenness of the grass, the floodlights, the turnstiles, smell of a crisp new programme and those pink, blue coloured raffle tickets. A nine year old who turned into a thirteen year old young man watching Spider, Wardy, Nobby.....

January 1976, that was my first visit to the Goldstone.

Immediately hooked for life.

I still have the programme. Their busy goalie later found fame ... Mike Walker.

So just 4 home defeats Oct’75 to May79.

Salad days.
In the League. Aside from that League Cup run, we really weren't very good in the Cups and had a few home defeats eg Wolves, Oxford.

But yes, I think that 's why the 0-4 to Arsenal was such a jolt in August 79. We just weren't used to it!

The league Cup games? Didn't Peter Grummitt make a brilliant penalty save at the South Stand end in the Ipswich game?

Derby game was one of those games. So tightly packed in the North Stand that night; hardly room to breathe. The only other two games I remember being so closely packed were the Boxing Day game and Wardy's international debut against Norway (U23s) when the legend took the ball home.

Happy days. Great memories.

Yes Peter Grummitt's save was from a Brian Talbot volley at the South End. An astonishing reflex save - can't think of a better one I've seen live

The 75-76 season we scored 58 goals at home

The 76-77 season we scored 63 goals at home

121 goals celebrated at the Goldstone in the space of 2 seasons

I am sure we lost 1-2 to a Hull City side that included Billy Bremner at this time? I am starting to doubt my memory though - it was only very recently that I realised that we beat Spurs on that day of all the trouble.. I was convinced that had lost that for some reason..

EDIT : Nope I am wrong, we beat them 2-1.. maybe we went 1-0 down or something. Did Bremner even play???

It was my misfortune to start supporting the club during the 76/77 season. Had that not been so great, I might not have got hooked and not subsequently given up so much of my free time and dosh over the following 44 years!!!

They had a very good side around that time, could have been

Not Mansfield.

We beat them 1-0 in 1976.

Why do I remember it? It was my first ever Albion game.

Also beat them 3-1 in 1977, the year both teams got promoted.

Why do I remember it? It was on my birthday, my folks got tickets for the West Stand, and I met Peter Ward!

Best save I ever saw from an Albion keeper in over 60 years of watching. Right up there with Banks save from Pele.

I looked it up:

75-76 Cardiff, Walsall
76-77 Wrexham
77-78 Bolton
78-79 Cambridge, West Ham

If I remember right, that Cardiff game a couple of their fans planted a large welsh flag on the centre circle at half-time and started to bow to it.. It certainly got the NS going.

He was in the Hull City squad at the time and listed in the programme line-up. Can't confirm if he played but it's likely.

I was a hell of a keeper, even if I subsequently forgot how to spell my own name.
