R.I.P. Michael.

Where to start? He was our main striker when I started to watch the Albion in the 1982/83 season, a quality player and an important member of that legendary Cup Final side. Who could forget his winner in the semi-final? His 37 goals in the top flight is a record, 11 more than Glenn.

So sad, and only 61. Legend.

What always impressed me was how he seemed to speak Spanish like a native, complete with the right speech inflexions. Someone better versed in the language will probably correct me, but to my ignorant ear it sounded spot on.

Not sure it's true that his father played for us? If it's true I'm surprised I've never heard that before.

I wonder if that's a mistranslation on the article or simply means Michael followed in his father's footsteps and became a professional footballer rather than specifically played for Brighton.

Maybe Tim Carder can clarify this?

It appears to come directly from Michael himself from an interview with British sports journalist Simon Hughes. The quote is from Hughes' book
"Red Machine: Liverpool FC in the ’80s: The Players’ Stories"

Here's a link to the complete chapter and a screenshot of the relevant passage....

I was actually at this game with my QPR mate
18min 15 sec in

Interesting that 5 players on that pitch were involved with the Albion! Pates, Rougvie and Dublin from Chelsea and Robinson and Byrne from QPR!

Regarding Robinson, absolute legend of the highest order and reading twitter is quite emotional. Sense of pride that one of our legends is held in such high esteem by so many others, not just in football and, obviously, not just in this country.

Seems that he was well liked by literally everyone that met him and you can't get a better epitaph than that.

One of my memories of him when I was a young lad at the front of the East stand, was before kick off he would respond to the encouragement of the crowd with a nod and wink in our direction.
An Albion legend described by many earlier posts RIP
In heaven Robinson scores the winner in the 3-2 win over Man Utd and the FA Cup for Brighton.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
And Smith Must Score - Issue 4 February 1989 page 22

"Goodbye to you Michael Robinson
Why Liverpool paid so much we'll never know
Those dodgy knees Michael Robinson
We'd just wind you up and let you go

Why did you pass to Gordon on that Wembley afternoon
We think you have scored the third yourself.
Look around you, all you saw were unsympathetic eyes
Stroll around the ground until we lost again

Goodbye to you Michael Robinson
Somewhat overrated at Manchester
One hundred per cent Michael Robinson
All the same you were a great truer.

Running into spaces where no balls would ever go
Can't blame you for joining Liverpool
It's a little secret that you scored just over forty goals
Most of all you passed in the last min.

Goodbye to you Michael Robinson
At least you did rid us of Ted May bank
To Osasuna, Michael Robinson
Not even good enough for QPR

Standing on a terrace on a Saturday afternoon
Hoping you'd be playing today, yeah
Laugh about him, shout about him
Then he'd go and score
Every time you didn't play we'd lose

Where have you gone Michael Robinson
A terrace turned its incredulous eyes to you
What's that you say Michael Robinson?
The ankles have finally given way...."

Wow shocked by this even though i knew he was ill. He is loved in Spain which says much about him. Great player in our first top league adventure. RIP big man.

There is no record of an Arthur Robinson having made a football league appearance at the excellent Hugman's Footballers website - Barry Hugman's Footballers

I guess it is possible his dad was a pro who never played in a first-team match, or perhaps he was more of a trialist than a contract professional.

He led the attack for what was "my BHA team"; the team that I first saw at the Goldstone and have supported ever since - happy days.

Travel safely Michael, thanks for the memories - particularly 1983.
