A quite tremendous band, possibly and probably, and actually terrifically good. Exactly what I've heard.... many times, and we've looked into that. A band. As I've said many many times.

Next question.

I wouldn't give a penny to The Who all the time Pete Townshend is around, the man is a wrong in.
Daltrey is fine in his Burwash mansion too.
All that money and they smash up instruments and Moon drives a Rolls into a pool.
How much evidence of corruption do you need?

I can't remember agreeing with Trump before but I do on this one. The virus doesn't move, we move the virus. In my opinion all passenger plane travel should have been banned by all countries day one. The WHO took a political decision over a common sense one.

I think I agree but it is hard to move away from the fact that Trump will do anything to deflect from his own incompetence. The time to review the way the WHO acted is probably not right now.

Entwhistle was not much better, spaffing thousands on coke and girls....and while smoking … he didn't listen to his own WHO advice.

I haven't seen his press conference, and assume I disagree with just about everything he said, but he may be right about the WHO.

My cursory glance leads me to believe they've covered up for China, resulting in the deaths of many thousands of people around the world. If correct, they should be in prison.

He is wrong about WHO.

If he did what he says and withdraws funding it would be the stupidest, most dangerous and most inhumane action imaginable.
At a time when we need global cooperation in a way we have never needed it before - to deal with the unfolding disaster of Covid-19 and to put in place the mechanisms to ensure it cannot happen again, you think it is a good idea to weaken the only body with the capacity to manage such coordination?

Most people I trust on this consider that WHO are generally an effective organiztion (not perfect, not frree of corruption - no large institution is) which has done well in the past with outbreaks such as Ebola (do you know how close that came to going global? If it had reached Lagos it probably would have done and it was the efforts of WHO and health care personnel in the region, huge numbers of whom died in the process that stopped that from happening) SARS etc. They made a bad mistake in taking the Chinese assurances at face value in the early stages of this pandemic (lots of mistakes will have been made in hindsight, and the key thing is to admit and learn from them, which is exactly what Trump is not doing) but WHO are seen to have done pretty well since and there is no other institution with the expertise and global reach to perform the same function.

Trump will not do this because there are those around him that understand reality and will ensure he doesn't. It's just bluster and pathetic attempts to deflect from his own failings (rather than own his mistakes like a grown up). If he actually pushes this through, against the advice of his experts then it will show that his brain is even smaller than his penis.

Have to love the increasingly fractious Trump press conferences. How long till Dr Fauci gets fired live on TV?

Quite right to hold the money back, they don't deserve a penny. The WHO reacted too late in this case.

Attitudes like this really make me wonder whether there is literally anything Trump can do which won't see someone come out supporting him.

It really is quite uncanny how Trump makes the wrong call every time he opens his mouth

It's a rare feat which only a few people have.
It takes a minimum of 48 years to perfect the skill to levels of Jedi Master...

... but believe me, it's worth it.

In his defence (I can't believe this is happening), was it not unclear at that time that China and the WHO were lying to us all?

You are correct.

February 29th from the WHO.

WHO continues to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks.
In general, evidence shows that restricting the movement of people and goods during public health emergencies is ineffective in most situations and may divert resources from other interventions.

https://www.who.int/news-room/artic...onal-traffic-in-relation-to-covid-19-outbreak

So there's a whole month after that tweet the WHO were still advising not to put in place travel restrictions.

Do you think the WHO had information and deliberately withheld it? That seems a little farfetched to me. More likely that in early January they were kept in the dark by China. From around the 20th they were stressing to the world the gravity of the situation.

In mid-February Trump was full of praise for the WHO. It was only later when he needed another scapegoat that he turned on them.

So everybody else was right about Coronavirus in January and February and the World Health Organisation was wrong.

Righto.

He is only halting the WHO payments that are eventually to be appropriated by Congress.
The sum is less than 2% of the bailout given to US airlines yesterday.
The WHO may have made mistakes but thousands more don’t need to die. If this isn’t a time for global unity, we’re f*****.

The Treasury Department has ordered President Trump’s name be printed on stimulus checks the Internal Revenue Service is rushing to send to tens of millions of Americans, a process that is expected to slow their delivery by several days, senior agency officials said.

The unprecedented decision, finalized late Monday, means that when recipients open the $1,200 paper checks the IRS is scheduled to begin sending to 70 million Americans in coming days, “President Donald J. Trump” will appear on the left side of the payment.

I think this is fair enough seeing as how his authority is total and everything and in these unprecedented times and all that.

If your tax rebate goes in by direct deposit from the IRS the stimulus money is just deposited in the same bank account.

Indeed. If you genuinely think that WHO were deliberately and knowingly 'covering up' for China then i'd suspect you have just got home from an evening throwing rocks at phone masts.

I've known a few people that work for WHO. Without fail they have been dedicated experts (mostly medically trained and with experience of practice) completely dedicated to doing what they do in often extremely challenging circumstances, and not always for much reward. To see them demonized by ignorant keyboard warriors and the orange narcissistic morality vacuum makes me angry.

No, that's not what I said. I was saying he was right that they were at fault. And if you want to stop this happening again, you need an organisation that will hold China to account for its actions, not one that will cover it (and the lessons we hope to learn) up.

They made a bad mistake in taking the Chinese assurances at face value in the early stages of this pandemic (lots of mistakes will have been made in hindsight, and the key thing is to admit and learn from them
I don't believe that the WHO made the mistake of taking assurances at face value. I believe the WHO lied and covered up what was happening. So obviously I don't think they're admitting to their mistakes, and I don't think they'll learn without being forced.

which is exactly what Trump is not doing
 Trump is a narcissistic maniac. Obviously he doesn't admit his mistakes, there's simply not enough time. Although I agree with his opinion that the WHO have messed up, I don't agree with his actions regarding Covid 19 (or anything else).

but WHO are seen to have done pretty well since and there is no other institution with the expertise and global reach to perform the same function.
Yes, it needs fixing, not binning.

Yes.

That seems a little farfetched to me. More likely that in early January they were kept in the dark by China.
But it should have been obvious to them that they were being kept in the dark, and they should have reported that.

Are you seriously pretending that the head of the WHO, put there by China, has done nothing to protect China?

And why were WHO representatives blanking references to Taiwan in interviews?

Because so much focus has been made of the travel advice and China, a lot of things the WHO did do have been conveniently overlooked. The link below is a timeline of the announcements the WHO has made, dating back to when they were first alerted. It’s clear that they were giving strong warnings as far back as mid-January, long before Trump did anything.
