Go back a few decades and that most certainly wasn't the case. Derby games between the two clubs were truly massive. The Palace rivallry was largely manufactured during the 1970's.

That's not my recollection but I do only go back 60 years I recall Bournemouth as our main rival and then Portsmouth.

The Palace rivalry was never manufactured It was a genuine dislike bordering upon hate which has mellowed a bit over the years to what is now.

On the BBC preview (where he mentions the dressing room soiling incident, but doesn't mention the guilty parties), he simply says that his family is divided into fans of both. On https://www.performingartistes.co.uk/artistes/jonathan-pearce it says that "his wife and three small children are Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace fans".

Not sure either of these quotes means that his son supports 'both' Albion & Palace. Sounds more to me like one supports Palace, one Arsenal, one Brighton, etc. Unless there's something somewhere else?

It happened naturally. By Feb 76 (my second Albion game & possibly where the Seagulls chant was started), it was unbridled hate against their fans and players. Mullery wasn’t even with us yet, the cup games later added to the hate.

I suspect all stemming from being similar clubs with big followings, always in the same division, similar league positions, and being just 40 miles apart.

I missed almost all the Pompey thing. Besides, their big thing has always been the Scum.

And to be honest whenever we play them a lot of our fans have bad experiences of their hooligans.
