.

Ubereats, Deliveroo and Just Eat self-employed delivery drivers in private cars would suffer lots...How would they get to Itsu, Nandos, McDonalds etc in central Brighton ?? Number plate recognition or 'tough shit buster' ?

Is the city made a better place by having double parked delivery drivers picking up somebodies dinner from the town centre to a suburb? Is that really a good use of the limited space in the City?

Are the best arguments that the car lobby can come up with is that it will be a bit harder to buy a massive **** off TV from town, someone may have to stay late to collect a delivery (or arrange to get the delivery company a key) and deliveroo will find it harder to get you a KFC?

Surely someone must be able to think of a better counter argument

Out of interest where would I park my car living in the centre of Brighton?

The Green Councillor who put this forward has deliberately left this light on detail if you ask me. She knows full well that there is a public consultation on transport strategy coming up and her job is to stir debate .... which she has clearly done. If she had gone in with detail of the roads affected and design posters, then focus would have been on those affected areas and there would be less discussion of the idea as a whole.

It's a massive compliment to Boris Johnson. His tactic of saying nothing at all about what you are going to do and still getting elected has rubbed off on friends and foe alike

I love Brighton but don't live there. On the one occasion I come down to stay each year, Marathon Weekend, I come down in the car. The rhino is tough to bring down on the train. But I honestly wouldn't mind at all if this measure came in. Forward thinking and not before time so long as the council subsidised public transport to facilitate getting around.

Ha, just realised what your avatar is! I borrowed one of the suits back in the 90s to fundraise in Manchester, wouldn't fancy running a marathon in one though (or indeed without one)

We haven't seen any detail yet, but my guess is you wouldn't

Car ownership would be designed out of the city centre, in the same way as it has been in the other cities which have taken this step.

You can sleep soundly though in the knowledge that your interests have been sacrificed for the benefit of the city as a whole

The way it appears to work in many of the European cities that have car-free areas is that residences and deliveries can still use the access but the road become pedestrian or bicycle priority, i.e. you have to drive slowly and there would be restrictions. Therefore you could still access your home and park but the priority changes and that is one of the key things as well as stopping through traffic.

You will still be able to park your car between 9 pm and 6 am.
