Why? The land belongs to us. They may have rights to take an income from it, but it belongs to us. What the government does with our money can at least be partly controlled by the way we vote, we have no control over charlie spending fortunes on his classic car collection, funded with money we could have had, because he is above democracy.

The shadowy state of royal finance is one of many reasons I want rid. It's ours when it need repairing, it's theirs when there is money to be made., They are the thieves.

I've applied for a £4m grant from the Royals to do up my house. No answer yet. Strange as they do up a house and they get £4m...

are we talking the same royals that publish expenses and pay income taxes not required by law? its not a very good stick to beat them with, especially given the practices followed by our politicians.

She wants the prestige and lifestyle but not the responsibilities that go with the job.

Does she ?

Maybe she just fell in love with someone who happened to be a Royal. Perhaps she entered that family with some trepidation given what we all know about it, but she went ahead anyway because of her love for Harry. And in him, she found someone who is also not fully at ease with the whole circus that involves being part of the Royal family.

After a while of living the lifestyle, and experiencing the relentless and endless intrusion (and vitriol) of the British media, and now having a child to consider, they've made the decision to try to live their own lives instead of the one expected/demanded of them. I think thats perfectly understandable and reasonable - with the caveat that they should be relinquishing the financial trappings of being a Royal, and doing it under their own steam.

The haters will doubtless say this was Meghans plan all along. I tend to think she may not have fully appreciated what she was getting herself into by marrying into that disfunctional rabble, so can't blame her for wanting out - but not without the man she married, the one she still loves.

I'm a soppy old sod though, but then being a grandad will do that.

How do you figure the land belongs to us? The land wasn't stolen in some battle (it might have been in some cases) but acquired by marriages, and purchases.
The Queen Mother, for instance, owned Glamis Castle, and when she died in 2004, she left it to the people, so she was way ahead of you there.
What are you going to leave to the people when you die? Your house and garden?

She should be the last.

HaHa, Elizabeth the last, that has a kind of ring to it.

Appropriate maybe, England first started to colonise and build what would become the British empire under Elizabeth the first, so the final nail in British influence in the world, (Brexit) under Liz the last would round it of nicely.

You mean the homes that most of us have to apply for a mortgage on, work hard until retirement paying it off that we might leave to our offspring after our estate has paid inheritance tax and duties etc. if we're lucky enough that the equity hasn't been used to pay for our health care in old age?

Are you really making that comparison that the Queen Mother leaving a property to the people is comparable to an ordinary person leaving their house and garden!?

I have tried to look up about the castle thing and , I would never doubt what you say, I cant find anything other than her family still live there?

Did she do a deal where her descendants get to live there but we pay all the costs, that seems to be the usual trick.

If you can find a link i would appreciate it, I don't expect you to do it for me but I have googled it with no luck.

FYI, I don't have a garden.

You're lucky you have a home expensive enough to pay inheritance tax on.

Btw did you realise the French president lives in the Elyssee palace? How much do you think it is to refurbish Westminster palace (I'll give you a clue, it isn't a royal residence) and the Elizabeth Tower/Big Ben?

I do fear for the financial well being of the 4th Viscount Rothermere if Meg's and Harry leave the scene, revenue boosting stories like this will be a thing the past....

I'm surprised the vote is so close to 50/50 on here. I'm fairly pro-Royal for the simple reason that if you work your nuts off for good causes and you get an MBE or OBE or Knighthood, would you really want some Etonian ex MP or some nameless apparatchik pinning it on your lapel or some one like Chuck, Will or Harry ?

There is still a small part of it which belongs to the family but it is open every day, weddings and a shop etc.

Thinking tactically, what is it the Royals do to help keep this democracy in order?

Why? What makes one slightly dim bloke more fit for the job than the other? If you accept the whole monarchy thing at all, then surely you accept its rules. Charles stays prince of Wales until his mum dies. Then he's king until he dies. Then William gets his go.

Unless Charles decides to abdicate after a period of being King - which I'm sure he will.
