I think they should be a current pro
Get used to 5 or 6 penalties a game in the Premier League the way things are going. What a pointless endeavour and absolute lottery VAR is making of top flight football.

Wouldn't make a difference. It's not that the Ref/VAR don't know what they're doing, or don't understand football. They are working to a different interpretation of the laws of the game than some fans/players/pundits want implemented. They are working to the interpretation that the people who pay them, train them, and instruct them want them to work to. If a former or current player becomes a ref/VAR, they will have to work to that interpretation, or they will lose their job.
What we need is players/former players being involved in the development of the laws/the authorities' interpretations of the laws (and consequently their instructions to the refs/VAR).
Nah, this rush of penalties is in response to criticisms over the lack of penalties being given. They'll receive criticism for giving them now and so will slow down on it.

It really isn't a clique. You like it, sure we get it and that's fine, but for a lot of people it's ruining the game and more importantly the match going experience which will never be the same again. Maybe we will all get used to it, maybe we won't but there really is no doubt it has changed the way we watch football. And for many it's changed it for the worst and I'd suggest that's the case for the vast majority of match attending fans.

Why do you think that would make a difference? Not saying the refs behind the screens are doing a good job but not sure someone who just happens to be an ex pro would do better. You only have to look at the ex pros earning a living as so called pundits!!!!

I appreciate what you’re saying and it certainly wouldn’t need to be one of those stoneage ex pros someone that’s retired within the last couple of seasons who knows what constitutes gamesmanship or an accidental coming together along with blatant cheating

Well clearly I'm an Albion fan so a desire to favour the big clubs isn't the reason I hate it. And I have no doubt in my mind the ref wouldn't have given it for Everton either if the roles had been reversed because no one in the ground thought it was a pen, no one appealed. It's a slow motion pen and I don't want the game I watch with my own eyes to be judged by someone sitting miles away watching multiple angles. It's not the match going experience I want.

As many manager shave said Millions of pounds rest on each Premier League point and they want the correct decision, So no one can moan when the decision no one claimed is given by a man miles away with multiple cameras.

Not sure I can remember a season with 3 of the top 6 being as poor as they are currently. United papering over the cracks today but look very poor relative to City/Liverpool. Arsenal still a basket case given the money they have spent and Spurs losing again despite turning up today because it is a big game. Throw in Everton as well and it could be a good chance for a middling team this year.
