I think part of the problem is space and time . . . . in the Michael rodent divisions and even Championship its far easier to find a space and wind up . . . . not in the PL, you're lucky to get half a second to let rip.

Start with Trossard (1), Maupay (3) and Connolly (2) with Izquierdo as first reserve if he ever gets fit against the likes of Everton at home. Puts pressure on Connolly though. Pascal Groß (0).

With Solly, I can remember 2 powerful strikes which hit the net, (once against Norwich when he was about 18) and once in our promotion season, he roofed one against ... I forget who, it was one of the series of chumps which they lined up to play against us ... anyway, he can do it. It's just that most of the shots he takes now bounce 4 times before dribbling to the keeper.

Yes, I seem to remember a more tangible sense of excitement when McCammon was lining up a long strike. He seems to have confidence in himself to score though

That may be so but neither have shown it in first games and Montoya tamely had a shot at Villa which he should have done better with from around the penalty spot.

Fell free to recategorise any of these, but I’m trying to make a point. We’re not that good at it. I watch the pre match shooting drills, (usually with a view to getting a first scorer bet on) and there’s more flying over the bar than there is flying in the net, which is a bit of a worry for a Premier League Team.

There’s a lot of talk about us overplaying and trying to walk it in, but maybe this is tactical. Ie we’re playing an extra pass because we’re trying to hide a weakness, or maybe we just lack confidence. Anyway if I’m an opposing manager I’d be telling my defenders to stay on their feet and invite a shot from 20 yards as it probably won’t go in. Is that fair?

Spot on RE: Propper. As soon as I read the thread title I thought about how poor Propper's shooting has been since joining us.

He averaged a goal every 6 games in the Eredivisie (I know the standard is a lot lower), so expected more from him on the goal front.

Here are his league stats since joining us:

9 on target
15% shooting accuracy

He averaged a goal every 6 games in the Eredivisie (I know the standard is a lot lower), so expected more from him on the goal front.

Here are his league stats since joining us:
60 shots
9 on target
15% shooting accuracy

15% is truly dismal and probably ranks him below some of the very worst players we've had in the history of the club. Also the ones on target have generally been unconvincing and straight at the keeper, there were a couple at one of the earlier home games, maybe Southampton.

This could, and I think should, cost him his place. I don't know much about Alzate's shooting yet as it's early days with him, though I was quite impressed at the way where at St James Park he found space in the box, then planted a header past Dubravka ... only to be ruled offside. Anyway, he looks like he has more goals in him than Davy

You're right, the law of averages suggests that even if he weren't actually aiming for the goal and just trying to kick it off the pitch near byline, he'd hit the target probably not far off 15%
