Glasgow Rangers were liquidated a few years ago, but their fans and most of the media still seem to refer to the new club being the same club.

It's happened to quite a few league clubs too. I think Palace and Portsmouth are different clubs now, legally, and it certainly happened to Boro in the 80s.

The Scottish FA pretend it's the same club, and pretend that the new Rangers have won the trophies that were actually won by the original Rangers. They do this because they think it's good for Scottish football.

Regardless of what the Scottish FA are happy to pretend, the reality is that the old Rangers were liquidated and no longer exist, and the new Rangers have never won anything.

It's different because those clubs reached an agreement with their creditors, so they were not liquidated. Rangers chose not to pay their creditors anything at all.

Relinquishing all the obligations but retaining all the sectarianism, perchance? Nice. It's like a Dr Who regeneration! Or do I mean . . . The Master? ???

It's a joke, but then Scottish football is a joke because of the dominance of the top two teams anyway.

Going into administration is bad enough, but being liquidated and then carrying on as if nothing ever happened is farcical.

Anyone else think it's time to bring back North and South divisions?

Reduce the travelling costs if nothing else.

Could still have play-off's

Mmmmmm.....probably not. The Albion were stuck in Div 3 South well beyond their escape date due to the arrangements and limited promotion opportunities, till the late 50s.

First it gives a tin pot feel to the regional leagues.
Second you can have a strong and weak regional league yet each have equal promotion arrangements (which is why Burton switched when in tier 6 - and got promoted).
Third, actually the lower tiers are better, more professional (literally), more vibrant than they have ever been! The National league makes the old Conference look pallid.

Basically some of the older clubs may be reaching their sell-by dates, especially those in the grim, poor north. Phoenix time.....and so it goes.

So it's a no from me.

Hence the reason Rangers had to start again in the bottom tier of Scottish football.

At that time did the SFA accept that Rangers no longer existed, and the new club had no history, and then later decide to pretend they had?

Pretty much. It was all doom and gloom, then the media and support started putting out stories that it was just the company and not the club that was liquidated. Rangers wanted to start in league1 but the rest of the SPL voted for them to start in the bottom tier. Some people even wanted them to start in non league football, but its probably right, you need some competition in that league.

The problem is that there's been months for "interested" parties to show they can do more than just be interested. The truth is that nothing has happened for either club. Every extension is just postponing things, not solving anything - and it's obvious that without playing matches the clubs can't go on.

Didn't it happen to Scarborough too - or was that before Maidstone?

The company was liquidated, but sold the ground and facilities to a new company that continued to play on the same ground. I guess it's conceivable that this could happen to Lancashire clubs, but in that case they would certainly lose their League status.

the fans are the club.

It was a widely held view in the 50s that the directors didn't want Brighton to actually get promoted because of the extra travelling costs in the second division. Whether it was true or not, when it was announced that the two regional divisions would be merged and then separated into Division 3 and Division 4 for the 1958-59 season, Brighton promptly went all out for it and won promotion in 1957-58!
Hmmm ..... yes, a definite 'hmmm' there I think ...............

Bury have been expelled from the EFL.

https://www.efl.com/news/2019/august/bury-fc-membership-of-the-league-withdrawn/

The EFL Board met earlier this evening and, after a long and detailed discussion, determined that Bury FC’s membership of the English Football League be withdrawn after the deadline passed at 5pm today (Tuesday 27 August) without a successful resolution.

Despite repeated requests to its owner Mr Dale over a sustained period of time, the necessary evidence in respect of how the Club would meet its financial commitments, has simply not been provided and, as a result, attentions turned to securing new ownership at the Club.

At its meeting on 24 August 2019, the Board agreed a short extension to 5pm today (Tuesday 27 August) to enable Mr Dale and the Club to explore the possibility of a proposed sale with C&N Sporting Risk Limited, with Mr Dale having accepted their offer. Following due diligence, C&N Sporting Risk Limited opted not to pursue its interest.

Therefore, having fully considered all available options, including a number of late expressions of interest provided to the EFL, the EFL Board has unanimously determined with enormous regret that Bury’s membership be withdrawn.

The EFL Board had maintained that there could be no further suspensions to the fixture list and that these ongoing concerns and the integrity of the competition were a significant factor in the decision.

Recent events have highlighted how decisions taken at Bury FC over the last few seasons have caused the Club and individuals close to it significant financial distress and there are a number of matters which, in our view, will require further investigation.

League One will now comprise of 23 Clubs for the remainder of the campaign and relegation places in the division reduced to three, which will result in a full complement of 24 Clubs in 2020/21. A discussion will take place with EFL Clubs on the consequential impact in League Two when Clubs next meet in September 2019.

Debbie Jevans CBE, EFL Executive Chair, said: “Today is undoubtedly one of the darkest days in the League’s recent history. The EFL has worked determinedly and tirelessly to avoid this outcome and it is with a heavy heart that this situation has been forced upon us.

“The EFL has to place the integrity of our competitions at the heart of every decision we make, and we simply cannot allow this unacceptable situation to continue or countenance the prospect of postponing further fixtures.

“I understand this will be a deeply upsetting and devastating time for Bury’s players, staff, supporters and the wider community. There is no doubt today’s news will be felt across the entire football family.

“No one wanted to be in this position but following repeated missed deadlines, the suspension of five League fixtures, in addition to not receiving the evidence we required in regard to financial commitments and a possible takeover not materialising; the EFL Board has been forced to take the most difficult of decisions.”

This is really sad. Over a hundred and thirty years of history, into this...

Welcome to the modern world, where 'Est. 1885' clearly means nothing. :(

Very very sad. Let's hope some kind of phoenix can rise from these ashes.

So many clubs around that area is it worth it ? Gates will always be a few thousand meaning struggling again.

I despair at the greed of the Premier league.and it's billions

RIP Bury

Will they even be able to be resurrected in the lower leagues, or will the ground be sold to pay off debtors?

It may seam a lifetime to some but to me it does not feel that long ago when we were on the edge.
Really feel for the fans,

I just feel for the fans. I remember how awful it felt when there was all the uncertainty over the Albion's future.
