If he's fit he should play, the absolute beast of a delivery that took Amla's helmet off will not be replicated by any other of the chosen bowlers.
he is just too good to have left out if fit, so 0-1 I reckon Starc will take us apart and the bowlers won't be able stop their top 4.
Shame and I hope its a case of fitness and not cowardess on the part of the selectors.

Anyone else rather UNDERWHELMED by this Ashes being squeezed in after a World Cup with no time for either side to actually play much red ball cricket.
I know the era when the Aussies came over in May and played most if not all the County sides before and in between Tests is long gone but this just feels like another brief stop on the merry go round of international tournaments.
Which it IS NOT, it is the ****ing ASHES. No I don't like modern cricket very much...

Don’t think he was ever going to play
We have jimmy and broad as the openers. So he was only going to be a backup......if jimmy doesn’t last the series, which I don’t reckon he will then archer will be first choice

Stays with squad. What a position to be in to think of dropping Anderson, Broad or Woakes for him at Lords and Wood on standby.

My son was supposed to be having some mates over tomorrow to arse around and play Xbox etc (he's broken his toe or otherwise it would have been the park for cricket, football and basketball).
He said to me this evening "If they can't make it, I don't really care Dad. I just want to watch The Ashes anyway".

Broad has loved these contests. Unlike Anderson, whose numbers take a dive against the Aussies, Broad’s game rises to meet England’s most consistently cussed opponents, particularly in the English summer.
A moment, then, to dwell on Broad, who remains for all his celebrity and success, a rather underrated modern English sporting great. This was his 450th Test wicket. Six men have gone past this mark ahead of him. Three – Anderson, Glenn McGrath and Courtney Walsh, were quick bowlers. None of those have anything close to his accompanying 3,000 Test runs (more than Cyril Washbrook) at a strike rate of 65.
Broad has been doing this for 12 years, without tailing off or preying on easy targets. His most dismissed batsmen, 70 of his total scalps, have been Michael Clarke, AB de Villiers, Ross Taylor, Hashim Amla, Shane Watson, Chris Rogers, Steve Smith and Warner. Had he managed to sneak in another Aussie here Edgbaston would probably have started to melt in the late afternoon sun.

Irrespective of the result of this test match it seems that he will play in the next with Wood out and Anderson doubtful due to injury./
I meant 640ish runs by Saturday.......
Kumar's analysis of how Broad got Warner today was superb. Showed the genius of the bowling. The way that Warner had alerted his stance after the first innings dismissal and how Broad worked him out. And got him again.
I've no idea why Broad doesn't get the recognition that he should from some people. He's one of our greatest bowlers of all time.
With Jimmy injured, if we win this test it'll be one of his greatest achievements. Even if we lose, we've given them a game, a bowler down.

Of course. But it's not the biggest disaster if that is the case. Jimmy bowled 4 overs. We've been a bowler down since. That's massive. To win (or draw) this game would be ridiculous. And we can.

Just checked out Jofra is doing for Sussex seconds v Glos. This is supposedly a run out to check his fitness for the second test.
Well.......he has done rather well so far....he took 6-27 from 12 overs as Glos were bowled out for 79 and he was 55 not out with the bat coming in at 6!
