Another game of 2 halves for Big Jurg.

I thought he was very good in the first half, strong, attacking, quick with some very good interplay.
Then (not for the first time) rather disappeared after half-time.

Hmmm!

Thought he was okay in the first half, but just offered so little in the penalty area.
Second half just not very good....

I did find myself shouting, “go on Big Jurg”....

I still think he's a big lummox who flatters to deceive and wont get into double figures (unless we have a couple of cup runs against lowly opponents).

Started well and faded but we will not be playing Champion’s League teams every week. New system and I saw enough of quick thinking and quick feet to leave me optimistic. AJ, Andone and Kayal looked like they were trying too hard when they came on. That was a very competitive friendly against a good team. You are not going to put a downer on my early season enthusiasm. Can’t wait for Schelotto to enter the fray either :lolol:

Bernardo played like a player who has lost his place and hasn’t had any game time. Hard to criticise GP giving Burn the nod. MOTM for me and yes I am shocked at how good he has looked in the last two games. GP is a manager who thinks “outside the box” exciting times (but yes it may go pear shaped and we may well get relegated ] but we have a manager who seems to have a plan A, a plan B and maybe even a plan C and D. Loving it......so far

The highlights suggest otherwise. (they are now on the official match thread)

He offered considerably more in the penalty area than our actual centre forward.
While I thought his link up play around the box was very good indeed.

But yes, again, his second half was very weak.
I dunno if he was targeted more, or more worryingly, (as it's not the first time) he struggles to go again after a solid but fruitless first half.

I thought similar at Brum last week but i think we changed the system at half time and Locadia was playing deeper, which didn't seem to suit him as much.

Did we change his role in the second half last night? I didn't see the game so really don't know.

The other issue could be fitness, we seem to be pressing much higher up the pitch, which does take good energy levels, especially when in a fluid front 3 where you are expected to change position depending on phases of play, team mates movement etc. He has always APPEARED to be a bit lazy, maybe he just isn't fit enough to carry it out for more than 45-60 minutes, he looks fitter than last season though, so could be something that is being addressed but not yet completed.

and Big Jurg was involved in just about everything that showed the Albion attacking.

I guess you believe he didn't defend well behind the fullback.

I don't think we changed, not glaringly obviously anyway.
I wasn't watching Valencia enough to know if they decided to pay him more attention, or maybe one of their substitutions worked better for them to the detriment of Big Jurg.

But he just didn't seem to get on the ball after a lively first half.
I think similar could be said of Trossard but it was certainly more noticeable with Jurg.

Hard to be sure from the North at the other end of the pitch, but first half looked for all the world like JL was perfectly teed up to burst the net with a volley just to the right of the goal a couple of yards out. Looked the likeliest of all outcomes. Yet somehow the moment passed. To be fair tho, did like his also first half smart attempted lob on the keeper, left of goal, that narrowly went over, and was in any case given offside. But showed a bit of a footballing brain even if the execution often leaves a lot to be desired.

Yes, he was involved in failing to shoot, shooting badly or being offside.

Oh no!
Heaven forbid anyone criticises Big Jurg [emoji6]

I've been criticising his second half all morning.

You on the other hand seem to be heading towards 'I've previously said he's shitehouse, so I will refuse to give him any benefit in the future'.

Were it not for TSB stinking the place out, your refusal to budge an inch would look out of place.

He shows a football brain sometimes but not others. He lacks that explosive pace to get past a defender so needs to be extra alert to opportunities the way Murray is - but he seldom seems quite as switched-on in the box as he needs to be. The goal at Birmingham was an honourable exception, but any such trickery was not in evidence last night. Maybe Pascal Gross should teach him the slow-motion Cruyff turn.

Yes, he was involved in failing to shoot, shooting badly or being offside.

Thought he was fine, worked hard, good strength, good lay offs and movement. Good first touch and attempted lob when ruled offside, much better than he has been and will continue to improve. Likely started next weekend I'd say.

This.

Not this.

So you think we are okay for strikers!? I beg to differ. Looks like the club agree with most on here too, since they are clearly pursuing new strikers.

Didn't think Jurg had the best of game last night but he was still ok, plenty of decent stuff. Be surprised if he doesn't start next week.

We still need a Murray replacement - again looked too slow last night and still not convinced Andone is the answer.
