'Obscure" US TV choices - recommendations please

Cast a net around and found "Halt and Catch Fire", apparently to replace Mad Men's slot on US tv, ran for 4 seasons, with amongst others the magnificently monikered Scoot McNairy, a face I guarantee you've seen before but can never quite place where.

Set in the early 80s, it's about the beginnings of the tech industry, the people moving and shaking that industry, and is utterly marvelous. Granted, I've yet to finish season 1 but if I didn't have to be up in the morning, I'd be quite happy to carry on through the night.

Tense 6 parter based upon a mass shooting at a posh Swedish school, book won Nordic Crime Novel of the Year. If not one of the VERY bestest Scandi dramas, still pretty strong.

We've watched the opening episode of Hanna.

It was very true to the film, which isn't necessary a bad thing, but does have a hint of 'why bother'.
Will probably keep at it for a bit longer.

Just watching Hanna at the moment, Im quite enjoying it I didnt realise it was a movie too.

Finished watching 'The Case Against Adan Syed' on Sky, highly recommended it.

As you're enjoying the TV programme I'd stick with it.
If you can't fully commit but still are curious about how it ends, watch the film.

We've started watching a new 'fluffy' cop show - Whiskey Cavalier



FBI & CIA agents are thrown together to form a 5 strong 'task force'.

It wants to have it's cake and eat it, personality clash, drama, comedy, violence, completely unbelievable, etc, but you know what, if you accept it for what it is, it almost gets away with it.

The comedy aspect does actually get us laughing 'out loud', which is rare and each story rolls along well enough.

I do commend it to the house assuming you pop your brain out and put it in front of a good book!

Ha, great offering. Sounds perfect for those 'come downs' from something bleak and draining.

Talking of which, Escape at Dannemora. Prison-based drama. Patricia Arquette cleaned up major awards for this, a majestic Benicio del Toro, David Morse, directed by Ben Stiller. Based on a true story so you know it's going to be pretty intense. It's excellent.

I have another less than highbrow recommendation, this time an actual comedy.





All very man/child stuff that's been done a thousand times already, but 2 episodes in an both have made me properly laugh out loud.


Definitely not one for your brain, and you're probably better off making sure it's not even in the same room as the show.
You wouldn't want it catching anything serious like Stoooooopiditis.

Have simultaneously been enjoying both The OA and The Ozarks on Netflix.

The OA is a sci fi series requiring somewhat of a leap of faith to ‘believe’ but is exquisitely written and acted. The most relevant thing I can liken it to would be both the book and film of Cloud Atlas.

The Ozarks - money laundering for Mexican cartels by a straight laced accountant in the boondoks of backwater America.

Just finished 'The Americans' and really enjoyed it. Couple of KGB agents living in Washington as a typical American family. Worth a watch

I enjoyed Black Summer on Netflix. High on action, low on characterisation and not too long.

The OA is a sci fi series requiring somewhat of a leap of faith to ‘believe’ but is exquisitely written and acted. The most relevant thing I can liken it to would be both the book and film of Cloud Atlas.

I'm halfway through season 1 of The Ozarks and finding it a bit meh. I just don't feel invested in my of the characters. It's also a bit slow, which I wouldn't mind if there was more character development and better dialogue.

The Americans is good bit of action packed escapism.

I binged season 1 of The Sinner last week and quickly moved on to season 2. I'd recommend watching it without reading anything about it first to avoid spoiling the mystery.

I watched it on ITV1 a few years back when it was first shown.

A great idea, executed brilliantly with quality acting, it portrays the latter cold war period really well.

I hear you to a degree and found my coping mechanism was to focus on Marty because it’s a very Marty centric storyline from minute 1.

Season 2 is better for exactly the opposite reason, they’ve expanded backstory and introduced more characters to get involved in. It’s been renewed for a third season so hopefully they can expand and develop those as well.

I loved the first few seasons, got a bit bored by the middle-to-end part, but loved the ending.

Cracking series isn't - seen 2 of the 3 episodes. Co-produced by HBO and Sky. Really scary when you think how much worse it could have been, and the refusal of the high level communist party members to believe their own specialists and try to push it all under the carpet. And the radiation meters that only went up to 3.5 units - so that's what the level of radiation must be!
